One thing I disgree with what the OP mentioned was taking 4 to 5 hours to level. I hope not either. I want it to take days if not weeks to do so.
Think you misunderstood that part :D
People are saying 4-5 hours per level. Early game I think this would be an issue. Late game, I expect this. Now if you are saying you want it to take days or weeks per level then that's a whole new ballgame lol. I am all about the journey. But I do like getting new things. Who doesn't right? If it takes a month to get 4 levels and new spells or abilities then that's a bit much. I don't think it should or even will take more than 3 months to reach cap. Still need to give people time to experience the end game before new content which means epic quests and all. Those can take some people 6 months to finish
I solo'd early in EQ with my monk, obviously a poor solo class, and it took sometimes 10 hours to gain one level even around level 10. So 4-5 hours even at "low level" isn't unreasonable. Like I said in another thread, go hop on p1999 and solo to level 10 untwinked. If the game is fun, I just fail to see how increasing the leveling speed makes any difference other than reduce the overall effective content volume.

Monk wasn't really a bad class to solo up to 10 with ever. Iskar monk from 1-10 untwinked takes at most 10 hours. Hell 1-4 I can do in probably less than an hour. And that's with the xp penalty to iskars. But Iskar starting area was always better imo. People keep saying this but the game was never really hard. At all. The only thing EQ leveling ever was was time consuming. If you knew where to go and what to kill leveling is/was a breeze. I just don't get where people keep saying these things ... 10 hours to get 1 level? Maybe you should reevaluate your leveling path. Hell it didn't take me 10 hours to get 59-60.
Leveling speed needs to follow a curve. Easier in the early levels, avg mid levels, and longer high levels. This gives people a chance to get hooked early game and give them a reason to stick it out through the late game grind. If the grind starts at level 1 then a lot of people won't make it to 10 before quitting and moving on. Which as discussed in another post, we will need those people playing to cover costs. Once classes start to have that identity to them and people begin making friends the grinds don't become so bad

59 in 10 hours? 1-10 untwinked in vanilla EQ in 10 hours? I'm starting to doubt you played vanilla/kunark EQ.
Go make a human agnostic monk on P1999 tonight, I'll join you, and we'll see how far we can get. An entire evening of play will not get us beyond level 5-6.
And I can tell you EXACTLY where I was when it took me 8-10 hours to level from 10 to 11. I was on my monk at the dragon skeleton in steamfont mountains. I believe that was a 6 minute spawn. I could not possibly have killed any faster. I don't need to re-evaluate my leveling path, there was no possible way for a solo monk, 1 week into launch, to level any faster without some exploit. 10 hours to do 1-10 is a straight up falsehood.

59 in 10 hours? 1-10 untwinked in vanilla EQ in 10 hours? I'm starting to doubt you played vanilla/kunark EQ.
Come on man seriously? I'm starting to doubt your definition of hardcore lol. Us hardcore players know how to speed level in any game. Yea when I first booted up EQ in vanilla, sure it might have taken me that long. But it's 17 years later. I've learned how things work and I know the tricks to it now. It is not nearly as hard to level as it was in 98-99. Back then I was careful and learning, and a teenager. Now I can and have had server firsts on multiple games. Most recently on Black Desert, wasn't first but 5th to hit the softcap of 50 on the server and did it in just over a day. That won't happen here and I don't want it to but saying that 1-10 should take some people a week of gameplay is a bit much.
Not to mention if you tie everyone up in newbie zones for days then it will just make it that much worse. People will be fighting for mobs and it will take even longer to get through it. The player base needs to be spread otherwise camps will always be full.
And yes, I've done 59-60 in roughly 6-7 hours of grinding. Get a good group and it goes quick.
You did not do 59-60 in 6-7 hours or 1-10 in 10 hours in original launched vanilla EQ/Kunark. Saying that destroys any credibility you have and indicates that, again, you didn't actually play the real EQ. You were twinked, or played with twinks, you leveled up later after multiple expansions were out or you played on an emulated server when you did the worst hell level in the entire game in 6-7 hours.
Take my challenge. We make human agnostic monks and level in south qeynos/qeynos hills/qeynos catacombs with untwinked characters. You will be lucky if you get one cracked staff in your first night and make level 5.

1.) Don't do human. The starting areas are pretty terrible past lvl 4.
2.) Don't even think I have p99 on my system anymore. Think I took it off when I stopped playing there. But I'll check.
From 10-11, if solo, do the Pit in Field of Bone. Mobs are around 8 so they die pretty quick and easy and the supply is never ending. Some of them will be lower but you can pick what you pull. FoB is probably the best starting zone out of all of them. And you can jump into kurns around 12-14 for grouping which is great xp till like 18-20. Steamfont is a horrid zone to xp in, like ever. Even lvl 1 gnomes run out of there its so bad. So yes, rethink your leveling path.

You really don't seem to get it. Do you even understand that iksar and FoB didn't exist for 6 months after release? Stop telling me to rethink my leveling path when you have no idea what the game was actually like to play when it came out. It has NOTHING to do with mob density. Are you suggesting that a level 8 skeleton in the pit is easier/more exp than a level 8 skeleton in steamfont?

I can't tell you what I did 17 years ago dude. I have no idea. Trying to answer that would be a lie. I am telling you what I have done in the past 2 or so years. But saying 'I didn't play the real EQ', yea I was in beta for it and played since the day it launched up until GoD. Every, Single, Day.
Again, read my previous post. You want to know why you level slow it's because you pick the worst areas to level in. Don't try to fault me because you don't know the best leveling routes. Hell google p99 leveling guide. I'm 90% sure they will all tell you to go to FoB if possible. Majority of the starting zones suck. Especially if you don't have a group around lvl 6-7

So you won't take my challenge or answer my questions. You're straight up lying at this point, or you're so far detached from the reality of the game that you can't remember the basics, but either way you have zero credibility. You did not level from 1-10 in vanilla EQ in 10 hours. You did not gain 59-60 in "6-7" hours.

Not sure if it is or not but it could be. Zones all had ZEM's in EQ. Some zones gave more xp than others. So it is highly possible that a mob in fob would give different xp than a mob in SF. Don't know that they do for sure but what I do know for sure is that FoB has more of them and more densly packed which makes xp come faster either way.
And yes I know it didn't exist for 6 months. But again, I have no idea the times it took back then. Hell I don't even remember my leveling path back then. I know I did blackburrow on a couple toons then but to tell you even which they were I couldn't. What I am telling you is what I've done over the past couple of years on p99 and on the TLP servers. Which on the TLP servers I did a dwarf cleric 1-4 in the dorf newbie area then grouping orcs in gfay. Still would not touch human area's. Especially Qeynos. It's only good till 4 then you get to suffer through Qey hills which is god aweful

Lol why is there a challenge anyway? The whole discussion was about whether or not it took 4-5 hours per level in the early levels. You yourself confirmed it did not. Now you want to challenge everyone to a 1-10 race see who does it fastest. I actually may take this challenge. Depends on how bored i get this weekend and whether or not I want to redownload p99. If I do I'll let you know. Personally, I don't really care lol. If you think it takes longer then sure go with that.
But if you're going to issue the challenge, you yourself should post your times, per level as well. Just so we can put to rest this whole 4-5 hours per level thing that people are claiming.

Dude I'm glad you have these amazing memory pills that allow you to remember irrelevant data from that long ago. Truely I am. But none of us have any way to go back in time to see what anything was like on the 'real' servers back then. XP has changed on them, including the TLP servers. p99 is one of the closest to original you can get so it's either base it off that or go from memory. Which you are obviously going from memory which is why I think you're totally off base.
lol, now remembering EQ is some magical dubious ability? Just because you have no clue doesn't mean others don't. If P1999 is the closest we can get, why don't yout take my challenge. It's because you know you'll get blown out of the water. You won't try it because you can't do it, because nobody could. But you'll stand up there on your high horse and tell people they were doing it wrong? GTFO.
