If players want to participate in crafting, they should have the adventure component of their character frozen until they reach max level crafting.  Then, when they are done, they can do an epic crafting quest, pay a bunch of gold and sacrifice a bunch of loot to unfreeze their adventure class.  Same deal if someone wants to participate in adventuring ... they should have the crafter component of their character frozen until they reach max level adventuring.  Then, when they are done, they can do an epic adventure quest, pay a bunch of gold and sacrifice a bunch of loot to unfreeze their crafting class.  This would allow players to create unique characters (adventurer/crafter hybrids)  --  There would probably be some resistance to this from players who want to participate in both adventuring/crafting at the same time, but hey ... they could always be on the bleeding edge of their preferred playstyle.  /sarcasm off

Certainly a fair point. This is why I'm partial to the idea of a toggled remort sort of system. Or something with a painpoint that doesn't involve losing access to your main character / the parent character. I imagine a freeze on a character--or straight-up retirement--would discourage use of the progeny system by a fairly large group of players. One could say nothing is stopping someone from creating a non-progeny alt, but I think the whole point of the progeny system is to encourage people to re-level through old content who otherwise wouldn't.

Below is a comment that gives us a window into how VR views this type of thing:

I hear you, but that sort of thing is really difficult to plan and implement.  If the plan is to implement an interesting but shallow system you have to ask yourself a bunch of questions.  Will most people partake in this?  Will most people enjoy it?  How long will they enjoy it for?  How long would it take us to implement and how many people on the team?

That all gets weighed together and, quite often, if it's not a system that has legs... has enough depth that people will be enjoying it for a long time and that it will appeal to most of your players, then it's just not worth doing.  Time is better and more wisely and effectively spent elsewhere.  That's why I was emphasizing how important the depth and longevity of new systems are.

    I
think that making this readily available to the great majority of players, casual and hardcore, is the only way that we're going to see a system like this. I do feel that a system similar to what I proposed in my OP would be available / desirable to the vast majority of players. The biggest problem, as I see it, is that people are left with the same class. Maybe this can be remedied by allowing people to make a fresh alt that is a Progeny, allowing each parent character one or two. As far as pain points? Maybe just getting a character to max level is the pain point. Maybe the parent has to do an epic-style quest for each "Unlock".

In order to keep people from feeling like they need to make throwaway characters, or just being left out because they don't want to make an alt or what have you, maybe allow them to progeny the same class via the same character (a toggle, as mentioned in my OP).

This is just off the top of my head, but I think it merits some discussion. :)

A reminder that Progeny is not a topic we are discussing or taking feedback on at this moment, please do not turn this into 20+ pages of arguing opinions that end up getting locked. We will release more information on the Progeny system if we decide to go ahead with it, but it is a way off yet.
