Pretty much a loner, takes me awhile to make friends...so that makes me a woodelf ranger at heart, which i've played as my main since 1999 thru EQ and Vanguard. Early on it was solo-ability, then as figured my character out it became all about power (dps), as I matured its more about utility within a group.
Luckily now I have a Core group of friends that I game with and when they bring on board new players my wife tells me to play nice...I begrudgely comply, but tend to mute them in voice-chat if they annoy me. 8)

My main is usually a paladin. I just like the nature of them. However, I did move over to more on the druid side, but I will probably just play both and be happy with it. Druids have a lot of utility I like and are more dps healers, which are fun. I also like the Paladin because of EQ and once I got high level with the Paladin people would usually take me over other tanks because if I survived that long on a Paladin then I must be good lol.
Generally i pick a race first. All my characters have been either a half elf, dwarf or human. No half elf so my options are dwarf or human.
Next i pick a class which can explore. When my group is not currently online i generally default to exploration. I tend to like classes that can explore on their own which means they will need utility and survival skills. Rangers generally are a good choice here but so are rogues, druids, shamans and even a tank which can heal such as a paladin.
I am leaning toward a dwarf rogue if their is enough utility abilities for the class such as open lock, disarm trap, find trap and secret doors, use any magic items, sneak, hide in shadow etc etc. Though i have enjoyed dwarf paladins so its on the short list as well.
two other classes are on my short list a human Dire lord or a human ranger. At the moment i am not so sure on the direction of the ranger not a fan of animals poping out of no where to do an attack then dispearing. I really enjoyed the Dread Knight in Vanguard so if the Dire Lord is similar i may play it.
Two longshot classes for me are the druid and the shaman generally both have good utility for exploration and i may consider them probably as a Human.
I usually roll a tank (or a bard if avail) but I have a friend who is a natural healer. Sadly I play from England and she is from America (we met in EQ on Rexxar 15+ years ago). So we are in a debate at which (if possible) servers we should meet on.
I figure one will have to suck it up and play on an EU/NA server again if possible.
That being said I get the call as I pledged for us 8)
The most important factor that draws me to a class is the fantasy/RP flavor it's built upon, which depends on the setting.
Gameplay-wise, I like classes that are versatile with some martial ability, plenty of group utility and non-combat skills, if the game has them (not common in CRPG's). I tend to gravitate towards playing paladins and bards, sometimes rogues (if they're more than just a melee DPS monster).

If classes are linked to races, I'll check out the races in character creation.
After several hours, I'll go back to my first idea and choose a class.
The class description does a lot for me, so do the skills or combat arts. Closely combined with my intuition.
The close community (guild or group of friends) can really be crucial to deciding what class would be my main if changes need to be made later on ingame. Although I don't like to switch around much after that decision is made.
I expect that Pantheon requires such massive amount of devotion to one main character that, you'll never run dry on adding more flavour and excel in your mainclass.
Subjective influences: I'm not feeling much for being a spellflinger.. although they always looked nice. And a well played caster is a pure joy to watch. (I actually did that from time to time in battle.)
I usually lean towards druid heals and bard. Spell effects and fluff are crucial here, if they appear boring or are not challenging enough, I'll quickly move away from them.
I'm hooked on the way a bard can really elevate an entire group's performance. I hope, I can experience that in Pantheon ones again.
First I cut the head off a bat, drink its blood.
Burn some incense, then consult my Ouija Board.
After that if theres no Necro class, I tend to go Wizard or Enchanter with Cleric as my 4th choice. It all depends on how the classes flesh out and how they "feel" to me. Honestly Im an alt-a-holic as well, so I will definitely explore all the classes, as I love knowing what they all can do. It helps in forming tactics but also when in pick up groups if someone is a noob at their class I can help them out on learning their class to play better, which makes the whole community better.
HMMMMM , I tend to choose a class based of buffing/utility/support . then its deciding on what races fit into it . after that its off to explore .
most often i play shaman / druid /mage/ type characters .
Honestly think this is first time I am having difficulty deciding between the three . They all sound great ( shaman having fond memories of eq ) , druid (vanguard ) , summoner ( any game where i cant decide between the Druid or Shaman ) .... I dread having to decide lol .

I enjoy playing a class who does good damage, with some pinch healing. If I can travel fast too that's just gravy. That's why in EQ1 Druid suited me so well. Later, I found I also loved beastlord.
I do not like heavy buffing classes unless they are permenant aura buffs. I greatly dislike having to refresh buffs every 10-60minutes.
In Vanguard I played a bloodmage and it was like heaven. You heal your group by focusing on improving your damage? What could be better?!
For now, I tentatively plan to play a druid here, though I anticipate I will try many before settling on a main. The Wizard sounds realy cool in Pantheon as well.
I choose my class mostly around class fantasy and class gamplay mechanics. For me a class fantasy is very important. While never playing much EQ or EQ2, I have played WoW since 2006 among other MMOs of varying success. Having character that embodies their class fantasy can be really immersive for me and that is very important to me. If I play a paladin I want to truly feel like I'm a plate wearing warrior of the light that uses my weapons and spells to smite the unholy. If I choose to play a warrior I want to feel like a grizzeled combat veteran with mastery of many weapons and shurg off incoming combat damage. Without a strong fantasy, I feel you can find it hard to differentiate classes and makes them non-unique and exciting. Addtionally, I think that its important to take the class fantasy and translate that to an exciting and engaging class gameplay. A class can very exciting and unique in lore but if that doesn't translate to an engaging gameplay, I find it hard to have fun playing that class. From my personal experience, the MMORPGs that I have loved playing the most are the ones that take a strong class fantasy and translate them into an exciting, mechanicaly diverse, gameplay for each class.
