I don't think that crafting is a small thing to those people that enjoy crafting. It could well be the only thing for some that really keeps them engaged.
I don't think crafting should be considered a throw-away aspect of an MMO, because it has the potential (if done well) to tie all aspects of the game into what feels much more like a living, breathing world.
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with a low level adventurer having the ability to achieve a high degree of crafting skill. But I do think location of combines can make a significant impact on quality, rarity, and overall value of that crafter's service that might not be logistically possible without also achieving adventuring skill. Or having a badass adventuring group escorting them as bodyguards, which would tie in perfectly (IMO) to the social tenets of this game.
I agree with all of this. Having a strong crafting community with their own identity does so much for the overall community of a game. I knew quite a few people who mainly crafted and loved being known as one of the master crafters on the server. It would be disappointing to see crafting implemented as a secondary activity to adventuring.
Addressing the OP.
I would make insert that having crafting material tradable keeps your economy flourishing, and can create sub economies.
I had this experience in Vanguard where I had managed to max a crfating talent where by I could make most of house materials. I also maxxed my faction on all continents which meant I could also craft all factions of houses.
When I ran into a rush of people needing houses from me instead of harvesting myself, I would advertise in world trade channels that I would buy ALL quantities of XYZ at said price. The price was a good one, and players lower level players needing cash did well sending me their supplies. I bought all I could get, sometimes filling up all my inventories. Over time I would use it.
The point being I was able to create a sub economy that kept players sending me tells asking about selling to me for a long time.

In theory, if a level 1 charcacter is a level 50 trade level, and somehow manages to get a bunch of high level materials from an auction house or by high level donations, why are you going penalize someone for that? If they are interested in just crafting, let them craft. They will have to spend a lot of plat anyways paying for those high level materials. Not to mention it sticks with lore. Sure there were blacksmiths that could fight, but most of the time the master crafters spent most of their time crafting.
Because that scenario promotes just having your own stable of crafting alts rather than having to interact with others in the game (directly or indirectly). Having to level that alt leather worker to level 35 in order to craft the best items makes you far more likely to hunt up some other leather worker to craft a one-off item (say for a quest) than just funnel mats to your level 1 alt and do it yourself.

Anyway, *imo* WoW was a failure from the very start hence why *I* didn‘t continue to play it ;) Its EZ gameplay in Vanilla did not interest me. You are correct: the culture of gaming did change. Though, it changed for the worse (no wonder WoW is in a dooownward spiral). Gaming in Pantheon can undo that though and actually be good again. Pantheon is progressing quite well, and having played Old EQ, there is no question that Old EQ and Vanguard are truly the predecessors to this type of a game and the direction it will ultimately go. No offense, but I’m going to have a bit more faith in Brad M. & Visionary Realms moreso than some of what you say. I’m really liking what Visionary Realms is saying on the streams. The Old EQ and Vanguard that Brad made were very, very good games and I predict the same for Pantheon for similar reasons. :) Mind you, Vanguard was not a “clone” of Old EQ either. And... I’ll leave it that. Cheers pal.
Because vanguard was a success...
You dont have to use the word clone. It's easy to see by your posts what you want. The amusing thing to me, is that it's obvious that people who want an EQ clone are going to throw a fit if something isnt included in the game. However people like me, who just want an interesting successful game, will adapt and continue supporting it for years to come. Who has more faith in the developers???? :)
@Porygon some of us have been fans of Brad since the ’90s and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Other devs have a similar history, which imo will just only make Pantheon better. Let’s just agree to agree that Pantheon will be an awesome game :)
