I would think insurance would be fairly cheap. I have also been a poor player(since I played a Paladin) and don't see a problem with it. But if you can't insure your items for some odd reason, then maybe you should go and do the corpse run and get your stuff back...not that hard.

I can't believe this isn't already part of Pantheon, out of the box.
Level loss is not yet out of the question. Last word I heard was that Brad was against level loss, and Chris (obviously the brains of the bunch) was in favor of level loss.
I understand they will hash this out and make their decision during Beta.
VR (various) have also put a lot of emphasis on risk / reward.
So at some point, the reward has to be high enough to justify the chance of losing your gear for a time. Remember in EQ vanilla losing a corpse in Fear, anyone? You had to find a raid doing a break and ask to tag along, and sweet talk a Bard or Monk to drag your corpse back? But at least the time it took for the corpse to rot was long enough that I only heard of a couple poor souls who never got them back. I, and others, several times donated armor and weapons to players so they at least had something to use going in with a raid to get their corpse back.
This was something which greatly defined community in EQ. You really couldn't be toxic those first years, because you needed the goodwill of too many people when the **** hit the fan.
Exactly. Doing the progression servers in EQ they made it so you basically only lose exp and not your corpse. I also played on P99 where you lose your corpse still. I have vastly different mind sets from both of these games while them virtually having the same dungeons. EXP is just a number, but that gear is tangible and earned and when you can lose something you worked hard for...like a piece of gear...then man does the atmospher feel much different.

Cheap Insurance would defeat the whole "Loss Aversion" concept. Like item repair in games where it's easy to gain 1000pp and item repair cost you 56gp, why even bother to have such a mechanic?

True, but if you die deep in the dungeon and won lets say like 2 or 3 pieces of pretty good gear that are upgrades for you or worht some money, and all the money you looted....well that would suck..I would rather just have corpse runs all together, but you know.
Zorkon said:What I think to be a better mechanic would simply be a denial of items for a signifacant time. If you die and your corpse is unrecoverable. After a given time (I'm thinking 5 days) it will rot and your items will be given back to you with no experience recovery. If you recover your corpse (necro summon or another raid can give you a rez) you will get your items as well as experience recover based on how long it took. 2 days you get 60% 4the day you get 20% (actual time and numbers just for example of course)
This is my favorite scenario for a Pantheon death penalty. Basically EQ's penalty minus the loss of items. And if you're unable to recover your corpse after the 5 or so day timer, how will your items be returned to you? I suppose they could be sent to you in the mail system...I like the idea of your corpse being sent to your god's shrine (or something similar) in your starting city, another reason to return to your starting city.
