Personally, I think it would hurt the hands too much.
I didn't play much Bard in EQ but I played KotBS in Warhammer Online. I just ran a macro on my keyboard to twist songs. I'd do the same thing in Pantheon. I like the idea of mulitple songs but I don't think we need to force carpal tunnel syndrome on people to accomplish it.
Just allow the use of macros with /pause. They'll also need something similar to /stopsong to cancel that synchronous chain of actions.
Frankly. What was the APM of a bard during classic EQ ? 20 (One keypress every 3 seconds).
What's the APM for any current MMO game ? At least 40 (One keypress every 1.5 seconds).
The carpal syndrome of the bard was a myth, it was simply the most active class back then, due to their mechanics and because the game was set on a way slower pace than now.

I'm really surprised people had an issue with song twisting. The main gripe I had is that it was boring in a lot of cases (for ex. casting cantata of replenishment, and then clarity until having to cast replenishment again)
Interesting that bards could be so active - yet were also the classic "afk class" since they could start a song, go on auto-follow, and still add value while they weren't there.
I am not sure that spending my life clicking six icons in a precise rotation while not even having time to look at what the enemies or groupmates are doing is my ideal of a good time but to each his or her own.
I liked the versatility of bard in games where I played the class. Mostly Vanguard but other games as well. Depending on the game - many useful songs including the wonderful run-speed songs, some crowd control, some light healing, some damage, other odds and ends.
A jack-of-all-trades class not specialized in healing, tanking, damage or crowd control. Similar in role (not at all similar in how it performed the role) to the captain or loremaster in LOTRO.
I very much hope that song twisting is not so strong that groups or raids will want bards to do nothing but that for hours.
I played a Bard to 50 on one of the recent EQ TLPs and I was enjoying it until I realised Melody was a thing. Being able to macro your songs made the class completely mind numbing, might as well be a bot.
Twisting was an interesting mechanic and fit thematically well with the class, I'd rather see that than anything akin to /Melody.
Hopefully Pantheon's version of the Bard is unique and interesting though!

I'm not familiar with the vanguard bard. Is it similar to the bard from rift (more melee focused with "song" augments).

Melee with only one song active at the same time, (aura like). However, each song has base effects and possible additions to it making you "flavour" every song with the additional bonuses of your choice (limited to thoses you have avaliable and the avaliable slots.
A bit too "passive" for me, but the idea of chosen effects is great.
