Well if all weapons/armor eventually degraded into nothing or got destroyed upon death I would likely use cheap gear for regular grinding and only bring out my best gear for big boss encounters. I would also be inclined to roll a class that did not depend as heavily upon gear for obvious reasons. I think you'd see a lot of players rolling casters and monks and very few players wanting to be plate wearing tank classes.
