First I offer it to a guild member who may need it. If they don't, then next is a friend. If they don't, then I will sell it or give it to someone else who my need it.
Baldur said:Depends. If I'm grouped with people I trust (either fellow friends/ guild mates) and I know that they are: 1. going to use the item vs selling it themselves 2. they will be grouping with me again in the future so gearing them also helps me out; then I will usually give it to one of them and usually it goes to the person who it's the biggest upgrade for. If the loot system allows for it then I am also liable to go out and give the item to someone I know, as long as they fit within the first two conditions above.
If I don't know the people im in a group with (or trust them not to sell the item themselves) and I don't know anyone who can use the item, then I'm going to try to sell the item myself to make some money.
So what if your very good friend is grouped with you and desperately needs 5000pp to buy a component to finish their epic. Do you let them loot this and sell it so they can do that?
What about your wizard guildie who can't equip this but has a warrior friend who will trade him the best wand for the sword?
All depending on the loot rules of the group when I joined in. If it is not for my race/class and someone else needs it, then so be it. If it is that no one needs it, I will be happy to roll nbg, if I were to win (which is rare) and I was in a guild, it would go there, if not, then it would go to a friend. I seem to always be poor, but always honorable.

Friends can talk those kinds of situations out like reasonable people, so they shouldn't be an issue.

As many have said, it depends upon the situation. What were the established loot rules of the group?
If the loot rule was 'Need before Greed' then if someone in the group has legitimate need, they get it otherwise the group greed rolls.
If the loot rule was 'Greed before Need' then everyone just greed rolls.
The important part is that people in the group, and those who join later, know up front what the loot rules are and accept them.
If I know someone who can use it, I'll give it to them. Priority = Group member > Guildmate > Out-of-guild friend
If I don't know anyone who can use it, I might sell it (if I have room, which is often unlikely since I usually hit my limit of items up for sale via crafting). More likely, if I want it out of my inventory, I'll go somewhere with a bunch of people and give it away to someone who can use it.

You would just get people selling the loot rights. It wouldn't REALLY change anything.
The "not dropping at all" is another story, how is that determined, if I have my box grouped with me, would it still drop? If not, then it wouldn't drop of I had a full group either? I'm not really a fan of eliminating drops as a way to try and curb a certain behavior. Theres other things you can do.
For me though, assuming I'm soloing, which seems to be how the question was posed. I'm selling the item. Unless I KNOW of a close personal friend that needs it, or I owe someone a favor.
Oh man, SLR is probably the most obnoxious side-effect of lore/no-trade/no-drop items. Hopefully this won't become a thing in Pantheon.
In this scenario I would prefer a group member that could use it for the toon that is currently in the group gets it. If not, do a greed roll, gratz the winner, and they can do whatever they want with it. Just don't slow down play because someone in the group wants to take 20 minutes to SLR to every item we don't need.

I think I'd sell it. If a RL friend wanted it, perhaps I'd part with it for free.
I don't regard selling it as selfish, as long as you put it up for a fair price. Someone will enjoy it.
Blood.

I can almost promise it will be if there are valuable no trade items. But usually it wouldn't be a full group farming it, more so a single or a few linked individuals, who would have buyers available before hand.
When I used to sell loot rights to the horses off of the seru praesertums I would find a buyer before even starting the fights.
SLR is trivally stopped by exactly one mechanic: You can't see the corpse of, or loot of, or in any way interact or see or obtain, in any way, the loot, flags, faction, or rewards from a creature for a fight you were not present for, within a tuned radius, and participated in offensively, and were part of the group that killed it.
In short, if you didn't kill it, you get exactly nothing from it, full stop. If you didn't kill it, you don't see the corpse. If you didn't kill it, you can't interact with the corpse in any way, because you can't see it. If somehow, you are able to both see & interact with the corpse that you shouldn't be able to see or interact with, it will appear empty, and you can't even bring up the loot window, if such a thing exists. If you can bring up the loot window, via some exploit, it will be empty. ( I think that covers all the nitpicking )
Now, whether or not VR chooses to implement this trivially easy solution to SLR remains to be seen. It is a solved problem, though, we just have to see if they do it or not.
If they don't, then it will be seen as tacit approval for SLR, and RMTers will be doing it from launch day forward.

I actually like that idea. It means if you put in no effort, you get no reward which is a concept I heartily support.
That said, even if you contribute 1 point of assistance (be that 1 point of damage or 1 point of healing) that sidesteps the entire point. But at least the person has to be there so there is that.
