Depends. If I'm grouped with people I trust (either fellow friends/ guild mates) and I know that they are: 1. going to use the item vs selling it themselves 2. they will be grouping with me again in the future so gearing them also helps me out; then I will usually give it to one of them and usually it goes to the person who it's the biggest upgrade for. If the loot system allows for it then I am also liable to go out and give the item to someone I know, as long as they fit within the first two conditions above.
If I don't know the people im in a group with (or trust them not to sell the item themselves) and I don't know anyone who can use the item, then I'm going to try to sell the item myself to make some money.
I think there are grounds for all “named” items to be lore. It will both cut down on them flooding the market and people perma camping their spawn points. If they are all lore then the item could be flagged to not even drop if I was the only on the loot rights table. If it still does drop though I would naturally first check friends, then guild in general then finally let the zone know if the body will despawn before someone can arrive.

Pretty much this.
I reckon it's why I am usually money poor in these games. :P
Haha did Kilsin get this question from that debate within the green mob impunity thread or w/e?
If a rare drop that I have already drops again and someone needs it as an upgrade then I will NBG the item. If it is a need group then I will need it and if I win it I will give it to the person who wants it as an upgrade.
I tend doing this sort of thing builds your friends list and immediately breaks the skeptic side of people about others in whether you are trustworthy or not. So I tend to lean more that direction.
I don't really buy anything from crafters, unless I can't find anything better from drops and it fits my character much better than any dungeon drop I could. I always hunt for my pieces and that means I don't usually buy anything. I like to try and earn my pieces through the exploration and fighting w/e boss or mob drops it.
Depends on the situation and on the loot rules in the game. Also, whether I was in a group when it dropped Kilsin didn't specify that. Whatever solo content there is could drop some rare items. Or without trivial enemy rules I could solo a group boss much lower than I was.
I will make the obvious assumptions. I was in a group. There was no need/greed system for items that could be sold (I sure hope there will be for any items that bind on pickup).
If it is a PUG with strangers I figure I won it fair and square, I need the coin as much as they do, and if the idiot developers (sorry just kidding) wanted it to go to whoever actually needed it they would have put need/greed rolls in. Or maybe they did but this group chose to elect a greed/pass system in which case you reap what you sow.
Since I am an altoholic I may save it for a future character that can use it. If it would sell for a lot and I am poor I may sell it. If I am in a fairly close-knit guild I probably ask if anyone needs it. If I am in a mega-guild with 12,000 members (OK exaggerating a bit) I do not offer it but I try very hard not to be in those guilds.
I am probably a bit less concerned about gear than most - I am not an endgame player I prefer leveling new characters. So unless it *really* helps a character during the leveling process I give it away if I have any close friends or guildmates or sell it.
-Pickup situation : I roll, my time is worth no more or less than anyone else in the party. We all have our chance, and if it brings cash I will buy something equivalent that I can use with it.
-Half pickup situation (1-4 good friends/guildmates in the group with me) : I roll, and if I win it I will offer it to one of my good friends/guildmate in need, maybe if he want to with a little cash income to help me upgrade other slots.
-Full premade of good friends and guildmates : To the one that need it the most, not only because his slot is crappy but because his whole gear could need an upgrade or his class has a particular synergy with it.
I said "Good friends or Good Guildmates" because fresh new friends or guildmates are not yet known enough to spare something worth a pile of coins withouth insurance it won't be wasted.
Okay presuming I'm not in a group when the item drops, priority goes...
1. If I don't need it, does a friend need it? If so, I send to my friend.
2. If I don't need and none of my friends need it... sell it.
If I'm in a group, then it depends on the loot rules we established for that group.
I use the item as the pivot point for some Snake Pliskin "Bankok rules" and loot everything...
(Assuming I'm not in a group) If it is tradeable and not Lore I would likely sell it. If it isn't tradeable or is Lore, I log on an alt if an alt can use and is in the area, otherwise I announce in OOC before engaging the NPC for the first player to come loot it and let them fight over it or pay me loot rights.
Kilsin said:Scenario - You find a rare item drop from a boss that you already have, do you sell it, offer it to someone else in /chat or something else? #PRF #MMORPG #MMO #communitymatters
Depends. If it's an upgrade that somebody in the group can use I'd offer it to them since they're there and should get upgrades first. Otherwise I would probably keep it and either offer it to someone in the guild or sell/salvage it. Sometimes if I'm feeling overly generous I might find someone that could use it and give it away. It really depends.
If I'm in a group, obviously, need before greed in the group. Everyone who worked for those drops has first chance at them. If I'm solo, then I ask my closest friends if they will use the item. Then move onto deserving guildies. And lastly, I'd sell it.
I have to be honest though, if I'm saving for something expensive and/or something I really need, I will sell it. As much as I like making sure our core groups will have proper gear. Again, if I NEED the money from the item for improtant things... nothing wrong with looking out for number 1. :)
If it is *tradable and not lore i will grab it for either a guildie or an alt. I never sell. If someone is in zone and has been asking about it ill let them loot. If someone else in group has not got and i have ill pass on /rand
If lore or no-drop I leave it up to the group to figure out amongst themselves.
If it isn't lore or no-drop and I didn't get that rare while with the current group: everyone rolls want/pass.
If I did get it previously in the current group: everyone rolls want/pass, I default to pass.
I'm a cleric that hates solo game play, so Im going to assume im in a group.
Need before greed is the way I tend to go but if I win a greed roll as no one else in the group needs the item, I would offer it to guildies first. If no one wanted the item and no need to store it in a guild bank, I would salvage it to see what goodies I could get and then offer the crafting materials to others if I don't need the crafting materials myself.
If a person in the group that killed it needs it, I think it should go to them. Even though, for sure, sometimes people will claim to "need" something that they don't ever intend to use. For example, I once had a guild member who "needed" an item and then turned around and sold it. Their reasoning? They "needed" the cash to get the item they really wanted. THAT, you can imagine, was a fun conversation as an officer because it was a long term member in good standing up to that point that did it.
Still - I want Pantheon to be a return to a game where community REALLY matters, and that means rebuilding the bonds of trust in an MMO community - and THAT means risking doing something that is proper to do, and then finding out the person who was the recipient of your good will - was... selfish... or whatever.
Outside of the group, It really depends. Will I give an item to a guild member or a friend that needs it? Yes. Absolutely. Will I ALWAYS do that? It depends. Even in EQ there were people who went out of their way to help people with whatever they needed - and there were people who always asked for help, but never gave it. If I know someone is the type of player that always asks and never helps, I don't always feel all that generous with stuff I have that they could use.
The final "sell or keep" decision after all of that that comes down to whether or not I have an alt (or an alt I intend to create) that might use it.
