Fantasy Novels - A Source of Inspiration?

This game is a fantasy setting so there must be some ideas from writers such as Robert Jordan, a prolific fantasy writer.
    For example:

    1. I liked that he didn't explain everything, he left the past mysterious.
    2. The Green Man, last of the Nym, a vine-woven construct.
    3. The magic system and the Dream World
    4. The Ogier.

    Steven Erikson
    1. A deep, layered past, a land wracked by magical warfare.
    2. The sources of magic are an aspected dimension into which one can travel.
    3. Disliked - The Darkness trilogy. Over-explained a history better left to the imagination.

    Piers Anthony - Split infinite
    1. Overlapping realities that one can shift to and from which have different rulesets.

What would you like to see from your favourite novels?

Many things will inspire VR I'm sure that quite a few of them have read a LOT of science fiction and fantasy.

I don't disagree with what you named and could doubtlessly add many others but I will content myself with mentioning Andre Norton. Her Witch World books may not have been as well crafted as the Wheel of Time but they were highly entertaining. I am thinking more of her fixation on characters having "pet" animals in many of her universes - similar in many ways to a MMO pet class.

Although Neverwinter took Drizzt Do'Urden, I would like to see some of those type of landscapes like the Underdark.

I agree completely with a zone underground with a huge number of levels, paths, traps, and no minor amounts of pure maze. Loved the Underdark. Then again, I am a fan of water zones as well. Both types of zones add another layer of complexity to the game as you no longer can just use WASD but must now think about the Z axis as well as the X and Y axis.
