This depends on a lot of things.
In a hardcore progression guild. If it's something needed for progression it should be all hands on deck at all times until progression is over. Most guilds are able to fund various things from just mats items gained while raiding but if they needed additional time spent, it should be a scheduled event so that there is no confusion.
I dont feel that just being in a guild requires you to always drop everything you're doing and help your guildmates but I also know from personal experience that you'd better make REALLY good friends with people so when you need help you can get it.
Is this one of those life lessons where I'm suppose to be honest? or a post to out people to potential guild recruiters? I'm confoozled
I would Absolutely say this question is based on guild rules. My current guild in another game. You can do whatever unless there is a code red, if we are defending a city as we play on a pvp server, or if a guildie is getting attacked and needs support and asks for it. Those are guild rules. apart from if there is a guild meeting or class training and you are online then you must attend. So when I accepted a position within the guild I agreed to those rules. If you do not like the rules or cannot abide by them find a guild with rules that work for you.
My friends would likely be IN the guild with me but, if they weren't and this was an "off Night", friends come first.
Example: if I join a guild because they raid on Monday and Friday. and this is Tuesday, sorry, I have PLANS with friends. If you "need" something for the guild, it should be on the guild calendar and scheduled. Lots of people like to PLAN their in game time.
What if my friend can Only play on Tuesday and Thursday, I am not ditching my friend and any reasonable guild would understand that. If not, I will look for a guild that does understand that. in fact, i will go one step further. Any guild that wants everyone to drop everything they are doing, with Zero notice, to go farm peridots, that's a crappy guild.
i would understand a code red, Rare mob up that is needed for a guild members Epic. that's different. i would totally drop plans in that type of situations, but not quitting plans jus because the leader is bored and wants everyone to drop everything and go farm gems with him/her. ... not ditching a friend for that.

+1
Also, I don't fret because I choose a guild that supports my priorities not one that gives me forces/pressures/coerces me.

Yea this about sum's it up.
Shoulden't be any problem as Kilisin's post says "they ask you to help" I'd be glad to help out the guild...when and if I find time (after my friends log or the next day maybe)
I have found guild's only ever demand once of me.
My opinion is guild events...in an organized guild, and hardcore guilds usually are....should be scheduled. whether that be raids or farming or w/e. In the event of an unscheduled raid or farm...if you are with friends outside the guild or family member outside the guild ( that does happen as different personalities gravitate towards different guilds) I would choose my family member/friend. If I am not engaged I would definitely join.
I believe you should be active in your guild, however not a slave to it at the beckon call of the officers at a moments notice. I come to my games to relax and challenge myself.I already have a job I hate...I dont need another one
I've been on the receiviong end of this a few times, usually with a PUG where said guildy was, like, just the class needed to make everyone comfortable with vareity of classes in group, enough to think about trying hard things even though we didnt know each other. Once we hget to the spot and maybe pull 2 monsters- sorry guys, I have to go guild needs me. Our group broke up soon afetr that and nothing got done. Honestly it didnt leave a good taste in my mouth about that guild, besides, like people were saying most guilds have scheduled stuff if they are driven. I mean I would have been happy with them saying they needed something, maybe we could have helped the guilded one, but another had started the PUG and we made decisions in that group beforehand and the guilded oe knew what we wanted to do because the group leader advertised in chat for what we were doing- or going to do an the guilded one was like- oh yeah I need that! .
very strange.

I think I sort of alluded to this in the twitter conversation about this topic, but I think it's super important for everyone involved to set expectations:
- A guild should set expectations with its members ahead of time about where and when they'll be needed. You don't spring stuff on people out of nowhere and expect them to drop what they're doing, that's just stupid.
- Individuals should set expectations with groups that they join if they may potentially have to bail. A simple "hey guys, I can help, but tonight's our raid night and I might be needed to sub in if someone doesn't show" is a pretty reasonable thing to say.
It's one thing if it's a scheduled guild event, especially if the person involved signed up and made a commitment to their guild that they'd be there. It's quite another if it's just a random "hey Bob needs help, we need you to ditch that group and come tank for us". That's wrong and the person is totally within their right to say no.
I feel like it's on guild leaders and officers to make sure they respect their members. At the same time it's also on the guild members to contribute to the guild. If I had someone in my guild who couldn't be bothered to help out when it's a scheduled, committed event, they probably wouldn't last long. At the same time if I had an officer or heck, even a member who demanded people leave their groups to help with unplanned stuff that they didn't sign up for? They'd be gone pretty quick too.
I'd post on the Pantheon forums, asking the developers why there isn't an option for me to hide my online status.

Hmmm I usually play alts they don't know about if I want to fly under the radar. So I would hop on my alt to play with my friends if I wasn't committed to the guild's progression. But if I was completely dedicated to that guild...my friends would come second. So with a question like that it really depends on how dedicated I am to the guild. The best guilds are worth putting the time into and making the sacrifices for whereas the poorly led ones your efforts usually seem futile at least half the time. No point in helping a guild farm mats when they don't distribute the consumables fairly etc.
Never in my life have I been in a guild that would give me hell for not coming to farm mats. If there's some kind of DKP system that awards points for participation, and I choose to join the guild and not go farming with them in liu of playing with my friends so damn be it. In a perfect world, this nonsense is just that. This is yet another garbage post.
Joining a guild is ALWAYS a two sided contract .
As I am a man of my word, I ALWAYS do what I comitted to . In all Guilds I joined (and will join) there is a written or unwritten rule "Guildies first" . If my philosophy were "Me first" then I could never agree with such a rule and therefore I could never join such a Guild . This means in particular that if I lead a group and a Guildie asks for a free spot , I invite him and expect him to do the same next time . If my help is needed for an epic , I will help and expect that I will be helped next time . If somebody is doing a boring camp (think shards in Skyfire or VP key) and asks for support then I will give support and expect to be given support next time .
Now, generally in all Guilds I was in , the rule actually meant "Guildies first if reasonably feasible ." If I am deep in a dungeon with a group depending on me, then I will answer that I can't come at the moment and everybody will understand . However every Guild spots fast members who manage it somehow to NEVER be available to help while they would ask for help often . These people are to be warned and eventually politely informed to leave the Guild and find something else more consistent with their concept of mutual help .
Scheduled common Guild actions are something very different . In this case presence of all on line members is mandatory if their time OL is consistent with the duration of the event . Now for those who don't like mutual help when requested there are always guilds where the rule is "Me first" . Not that I'd appreciate much such people but matters of taste ...
So the answer on the question is that I'd help my Guild because they explicitely asked me to and tell my friends who are for some strange reason not members of my Guild that I will join them later .

You present a scenario that can easily be avoided.
First off, 90% of my socialization in games is usually within the guild. I concider the guild to be my family and blood is thicker than water. Secondly, a game should provide guild tools such as in-game calander for events such as farming or upping the finances. With that tool alone, this scenerio becomes less realistic because playtime can be scheduled accordingly. Third and this is just as important, the game needs /anon to prevent anyone from seeing that I am online if I choose not to socialize or want to do my own thing either soloing or playing with others (and assuming no official guild event was previously put on the calander). Requests for help grinding mats should never be spontanious if its a guild function. I can easily say that before this request ever occurs, I will have already donated more than enough to have a clean conscience about playing with friends vs doing boring farming (again, if it was not a previously officially scheduled guild event).
This brings up a tangent that I am curious about that ties right into a previous response here. "This is why I have alts" was the quote. Will Panth have /anon? Will Panth allow to see if a character is online or an account holder? If I am guilded with my toon "Dash" but my acct name is Dash#1234 and I am playing on an alt "Dashed", will it show Dashed is online or Dash#1234 is online? You may not be able to hide from the guild and run an alt (play with friends) if it shows that the acct is active.

First off, I just wanted to point out that the full quote is, "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb," which means that relationships forged through life are often stronger than those who are family through genetics. Still works to describe guildies, though. :)
As for your tangent, I am hoping VR implements both character-level and account-level friending, so that I may choose who I want to be able to see me at all times. From my experience, people in your guild who don't have you friended should only be able to see if you're online through the guild roster, so if you log into another character who is not in that guild, then they wouldn't be able to see that you're online.
The problem with all of this is that we all know, if you have ever been involved in a large guild for a good while, not all members are treated equally.
There are always favorites, people that whine more than others always needing something.
Guid leader organizing 'special' events to get their favorites a quest item.
There are endless stories that people can list I am sure where these types of 'favortism' seem to always undermine guild continuity.
One of the worst is the teenybopper kid who can play 24x7 and is always whining for guildies to help them with this quest or that crafted item. Or they need x 1000's of this resource. It gets annoying when you work a full time job and hoping to get some quality few hours of play time in, end up having to do the bidding of the squeaky wheel in the guild becasue the guildleader thinks it's a good idea.
You can't pick your family. You CAN pick your guild.
