Given the devs have historically said everyone should be able to recognize the gear, granted mostly relating to looks. I'd imagine they would still require the original item name.
Ex. *Celestial Fist "Heartbreaker"*
Personally, I wouldn't really enjoy this feature solely because while looks are one thing, when you go to inspect you want to learn what the items are called. Also, it would be a system that is wide open to massive abuse that would be hard to control - I would imagine. All items would have to either be approved requiring man hours or we let the community police and report. I believe within the starting days of people receiving epics you will see some horrible things.
Ex. *Celestial Fist "Pens Crusher"* or without requiring the name ... Ex. *"Pens Crusher"*
Now you have to ask what a Pens Crusher is if you don't recognize the weapon or it's the first time you saw an epic. Then suffer other people asking about items with ridiculous names because they think they are cool.
Ex. "Hey folks, I saw this awesome item on some Paladin, it's a primary called the "Green Fried Egg with Fake Parsely". Where can I find that?
So in short, it would maybe at the most be relegated to your name or your initials.
Ex. *Celestial Fist "R"*
Ex. *Rogue's Celestial Fist*
Just my thoughts.
I would have no problem with an item displaying "Two handed titanium sword + 3 (Orcbane)" if the official name was two handed titanium sword +3"
Sure people could give offensive names but I am used to games where you can name weapons, mounts, pets etc. and it doesn't seem to be a problem. Historically naming special weapons wasn't exactly uncommon.
Drayian said: Just wondering 1) if people would enjoy being able to Name their Epic weapon so it is "Yours" and 2) how difficult would it be for the devs to enable that and what they think about it. All thoughts are welcomed. Thank You
If you look at the various pledges, several of them get item renaming vouchers which, I suspect, will let you do exactly that.
From a programming perspective, this would not be a hard task to accomplish. However, there this would play against the natural lore of the epic item itself. Usually epic items require an immense amount of questing, exploring, adventuring, research to find out about them. Only through that lore are you able to find or rebuild the item. By stripping the name away from the epic item, the lore behind the original name would be no longer make sense in accordance to the name. So, I would have to vote against this. Allowing crafters who make that "Titanium Long Sword +3" to give it a name by imbuing certain Banes/Magic/Qualities into it would be acceptable in my mind though :)
I loved the classic Diablo 1 style naming of items where it would give a title and surname to the item's name based on the enchantments it had; "Ogre's Maul of the Titan" "Godly Full Plate of the Whale"
As Vandraad said, any pledge above Keeper's includes "5 item renaming vouchers." So we will probably see something like this, although the details have yet to be announced. Epic weapons may or may not be exempt from this. My guess is that the name change will only be visible to you and be for your own personal flavor. My opinion is that epic weapons, moreso than any other item, have a lot of character and flavor to them. There is a story behind them and I like the lore they carry naturally. I personally wouldn't want to change its name. But if it's only cosmetic and only visible to you, I don't really care what you do haha.
I like the idea of being able to name your Epic.
Throughout history "famous" weapons had their own names. Renaming it wouldn't change the item appearance, and thus not the "recognizability" I suspect that, like in EQ, the Epic weapons will be readily identifiable. So when that Pally renames his "Fiery Defender" the "Orc Slayer" or the "King Slayer", it won't matter what it's called because it will still be readily identifiable.... Several of the Epic weapons in EQ had "alternate" slang names. As an example, the Ranger Epic was called 'the leaf blower'.
