Bone Crunching Combat Sound

I believe in Everquest1 when you were fighting humanoids you could hit them with such force that it would make a bone crunching sound.  You just had to hit for so much damage maybe?  I'm not sure.  Would be cool if there was something like that in pantheon if you hit the mob really hard it would make a different more noticable sound.

I'm sure I heard a sound very much like this in the last couple streams. Anyone else?

I've heard it a few times in the various streams though usually it was the NPC laying the smackdown on a player.

I think it was triggered by a damage threshold, probably tied to the mob level more than max HP, as humanoids bosses with millions of HP made bone crushing sounds everytime a rogue backstabbed them or a big critical hit came in from a warrior with a 2 hander.

Players were also crushed the same way, which happened a lot with big bosses. (Avatar of war flurries were like "Triple crush sound" )

Yup definitely already in-game :) Seems to trigger when you are critically hit. But I agree that making it feel like your abilities have impact is very important. This involves both audio and animations. That's true for any game, but is usually a degree of polish that's added later. Whether people realize it or not, the satisfying audio/visual crunch when dealing lots of damage is addicting.

^ this. Such a pleasant sound when you have acquired some new gear or level.

I also related the sound as the "Oh crap it's time to run" sound.  If me getting hit was making it.

That's what I was thinking too.  It sounded like a crit to me.

I recall hearing that the bonecruncher sound in EQ was to representative of a 20 roll on a DnD die modeled after the DnD method.

Heard it, love it, and hope the sheild bash sound is just as epic. I want to know my warrior is pounding the living crud out the enemy or blocking a heavy attack.

Speaking of the sounds, some of them sound like they were literally copied from EQ.

Is there an audio set out there to license to use the same audio or did they just re-create sounds that are almost similar?

I ask because I’ve heard, what I thought was, the EQ rat sound in other media. It was another game or a movie or something. I know there are huge audio sets you can buy to put in your game and I'm sure many of them have been around for decades.

If that's the case, how are they doing that legally? I imagine it's just placeholders because they couldn't ship it like that.

Bone crushing sounds were legit and I hope Pantheon has some awsome sound design for the various combat actions. Like a slashing weapon sounds like a meat cleaver slicing through sinue or a spear penetrating armor. i'm Hyped for combat!

Good question. In one of the streams, Joppa mentioned that he basically took an EQ sound bite and modified it himself to polish it up and fit his needs.

Many of the sounds you're thinking of are actually Public Domain, and therefore not copywrite/IP protected.

But even still, I've not dragged/dropped any of them outright. I have taken that base sound and edited + enriched it while adding additional sonic elements to it. So the DING! you are hearing in streams is not the same as the original EQ ding, it has been evolved quite a bit. Also, some of the protective buff and heal SFX sound like the originals, but are in fact original SFX I've made to sound similar.

In the end, it's unlikely these particular SFX will stay in for launch, but for now they are just a /nod to a game that fundamentally inspires much of what we do :)

The one exception may be the fanfare for quest turn-ins :)

Yeah that's pretty disappointing. The ding is so incredibly iconic, I hope at least that stays in. In fact, I'd say it almost needs to stay in. That is the best way to pay homage to the game that started it all. And people are so used to it from the streams, I think it would upset a lot of people if it was taken out. Everytime someone dings on stream, the chat lights up with people talking about how much they love that sound because it brings back memories. I personally like the buff sounds, but wouldn't mind too much if they were replaced.

I, for one, love the ding. So if anything stays for launch, that's the one. :)

I agree with all of this.  I wwould like to see each spell line get its own set of casting soounds like many of them have their owwn sounds once active.

Just don't get rid of that buffing spell sound. You know, the one with the "ahhhh" sound. That just brings everything back.

I understand it's a nostalgic kick for most players, it's just something that is embedded into ones body and mind.

I actually saved many music files of games in the past and I still listen to them every so often, even without the game itself.

But it would be good for the game itself to distance themselves clearly from their inspiration.

I for one, look forward to their own take on how the music in their game preferrably sounds like.

Hey, if they can ever top that EverQuest login theme, mission accomplished. That to this day remains a shining example of how to actually get your players strangely excited to login even though they already were. Still, I like the Ding!. ;p

Back to the OP, yes, the ciritical hit sound is good and I'd like to hear lots of use of audio for real in-game cues.  Broken mez, stuns, resists, AoEs, etc. etc. would be great to have audio cues so we can be playing the UI less and more immersed.

Not that audio isn't part of the UI, of course, but it always feels more organic.
