One solution is to have items that are smaller and easier to swap out. Let us take fire and cold as the only possible scenarios to keep it simple. If your plate armour is +10 against cold maybe you can have a ring or bracer or magical hairnet (+2 if the character has long hair?) that allows you to reverse polarity and make it +10 against fire. Is this good - no - it means you can get by with just one set of armour and the hairnet. Is it better than ignoring encumbrance and weight and letting you carry around a complete extra set of plate armour? To me it is. Is it better than letting you strip almost naked in the middle of a melee and replace the whole set of plate armour? Darn right it is!
Yeah! very much like my idea!. Initially in the amberfaet stream they showed the use of potions to imbue armor- but I think that gave the impresiosn of splashing potions/consumables on armor to acclimate them for the encounter where I understood it to be a permant one use thing, once potion is used that armor is then so imbued.
I personally would not want to be encumbered by potions or having to occupy bag space with a variety of potions just in case, nor forget the lesson form EQ2 where class specific potions were needed in crafting and created bottlenecks in crafting so I would not want bottle necks in imbuing armor by relying on one class to make my acclimation potions- hence my idea on clickies that were good in-of-themselves, wearable yet also destroyable in an augmentation sort of way to permantly imbue a piece of armor, and at the same time making room for another ring acclimating in the opposite direction.
So like, I have regular wrist with nice stats hp/mana. I have clicky ring of fire with nice stats hp/mana. Fire fight. I click ring to imbue wrist with +5 fire temporarily. I find a +5 cold ring with also nice stats, hp/mana. Easily or lazily or off-time obtainable are fire gems of imbuing(consumable) that cost money or quest/harvest time and offer the choice to destroy an item with fire clicky to permanently imbue another piece of armor. I decide to destroy my ring with some fire gems to permantly imbue my wrist with +5 fire, then slip on the +5 cold ring that has no resist except for the clicky but some nice stats/hps whatever. I am in a cold fight. I click the ring to give my wrist +5 cold temporarily in addition to the already +5 fire it has permanently to help me through the fight.
Maybe get me through the cold where I am now temporarily acclimated to, and into the hot area at the top of amberfaet where I am now permanently acclimated to- to where the secret forge is on the floating roatating geode and being so permanently acclimated I can spend some time there forging if I needed to. Then depending on the cool-down timer on my ring, run out of amberfaet when I am done through the cold area by using my ring again untill I am outside. Where I might find a poison ring....useable on boots only, hmm. I heard poison gems are around the Faerthael area or that huge snake named.
