Doing things while not even playing would not seem to enhance the "old school" flavor of the game.

I would not be very happy with an off-line tool that lets us do anything but look.

    Why?

I conceded that a few things might be taking it too far, like bank deposits / withdrawls from inventory.  That one is definitely iffy and probably doesn't fit in with the vision.

But organizing one's inventory, or swapping out gear sets, or chatting with your guild, are really not something exclusive to old school mmo's.  You aren't really "playing" the game when you are organizing your inventory.

Anyway, I tried to limit it to things that are not centered around playing the game, but rather, tools that could potentially get included anyway.  There has been some concern about not being able to find groups or schedule things, and depending on what sort of LFG tool they implement, it could be useful to do from mobile.  It's really for maintenance related things.  Being able to do that when you can't be sitting at the PC could be useful.

Just some food for thought!  It's probably not a high priority either way, but it is a cool feature of Destiny 2 that really stood out.

Talking is fine though given that third-party applications like Discord are already used for this in many MMOs it may not be worth too much time or resources for VR to set up its own system.

I simply have this set-in-my-ways preference for things not happening in the game (like a character going from one location to another, accessing a bank, changing outfits even cosmetic outfits etc) unless the player is actually logged *into* the game.

I see it as a slippery slope and envision the day when all too many things are done via remote devices rather than actually inside the game. I see the appeal to people that spend huge amounts of time with devices and not so much with real computers but that isn't the game I want to play.

I will admit back in early eq1 i used a hex editor to explore some of the zones. There was nothing but blank zone walls with no mob spawns. But it helped me to get a lay of the land so i knew where i could go and where i couldnt. Helped for planning corpse runs in raid zones i was soon going to venture into. I never ran 3rd party on open client and despise those that do.

I loved magelo back in the day and i would suspect that some 3rd party will attempt to create something like this, so if Pantheon creates an official version before them it will let them control the marketshare for this kind of feature. As long as it is external to the game and does nothing but supply information i am all for it.

I love seeing the items people gather without knowing where to get them. I still enjoy the mystery of finding that item or where it drops. It's like hearing about a movie without the spoilers. I know of its existance, now i will go explore on my own to figure it out.

As someone who ran a large data driven site (the largest I guess) for Vanguard. I am not expecting to see an API that people can suck all the data out of the game. I would be shocked and dismayed if that occurred.

A basic dump of a guilds information maybe? Some might deem it invasive? Not wanting their guild information freely available.

The same goes with Character information. Should my characters information be available for anyone to peruse via an API?

I am quite confident no API for dumping an item DB will ever be part of a Brad game. But as the saying goes 'never say never'.

This DB is an old design, 2006 approx. I hope it gets the point across. Had over 130 tables I think, maybe 500K item records.

I would think that anything official from Pantheon would allow an opt out option for any data collection?

Teamviewer already exists and would allow you to play the game entirely on mobile.

Creating an app with more functionality would just level the playing field from those who can't use TViewer.

I know VR is against any sort of ranking system....

You said it all right here.  First success then growth then change.

Just read a convenient article about how pvp console stat tracking has influenced poor player behavior. Just saying. If someone wants or NEEDS to be the best they will stop at nothing to accomplish this. Including faking/paying for achievements or harming fellow players to gain those #1 max lists. Player stat tracking/ranking is literally a pandora’s box. I feel like this should be 3rd party and optional. Magelo version was fine by me, just showing what you had done and what you had.

I want the ap to have a single button push order a copy of my character sheet to be printed on a t-shirt, charged, and shipped.  At the first Fan Fair in Las Vegas (c'mon - we all know it's going to be Vegas baby!) I expect to be looking at each other with our character sheet t-shirts ands enjoying the hell out of it.

Never heard of TViewer - not a shock I don't use mobile I use computers.

Something that lets people play on mobile devices doesn't bother me - well it does that tends to change the demographics in ways I don't much like and people playing on mobile probably tend to much shorter stretches of play time and more interruptions. Plus they often find it a lot more difficult to see what is happening and have inferior controls. Making grouping with them a challenge. I've seen some of that grouping with console players in other games.

But my point wasn't to object to putting the game on mobile - my point was to object to people setting their characters to do things while they weren't actually logged in and playing. Much like multi-boxing with one or more characters being autonomously run - a violation of almost all games code of conduct in my experience.

Then again maybe I miunderstood the point and objected to something that wasn't actually being suggested.
