Based on that wonderful tech/Art twitch stream. One of the areas was at the top of a high wall/tower with a massive vista to look out over AND a bunch of flags.
So, how about putting a name plate at the base of each flag?
Lots of links to Lore could be added and it would give people cause to go up there so all that vista doesn't get passed by.
The flags could honor the fallen fifty of some epic battle or maybe heroes of past wars or such.
One of them could say, "Kelenin wuz here..."
Seriously though, things like that are what I appreciated in EQ1. Would be cool to see such things in Pantheon as well :)
That actually sounds pretty cool, like each flag represents a fallen soldier who died defending the kingdom or something of the likes. And you can click a little thing next to each flag that gives you a description of who they were, or just a name, rank, and age type of deal.
This also has given me the idea of having a lore book, where you can find things throughout the world that have some meaning and by discovering them, you've unlocked a piece of history that would go in a book type of deal. Kinda like what SWTOR has with lore objects and datacrons. Might make a forum for this later :P
Yes please. Little details like this really make the world feel more real.
I do like the lore book idea as a way of keeping track of things you've discovered but I worry that codifying lore in that way can limit as well because you're turning the collection of the lore bits into a minigame of sorts.
Anyway, I think lore begins with giving places and things a history - who built it? Why is it there? etc. If every place or thing in the game can have that sort of history, in a way that's discoverable (but not easy!) for players.... that'd be awesome :)
I like it. Or what if there was some sort of in-game quest/achievement where one of the rewards was having your character's name/info immortalized in the world on one of the nameplates? This would of course be limited to only the first X people that complete it. This idea could probably be applied to other areas of the game too. Perhaps if you complete an insanely difficult task for an NPC, they will have a statue of you built in their city. Talk about a sense of accomplishment.
I can dig it! To expand on Kelenin's idea ... we already know Convo will be looking for super bug reproducers ... maybe VR can hold a little in-house competition where the top X amount of bug finders get to put a "Kelenin was here" type of mark somewhere in the world. One thing I remember in EQ2 is that there was a way to do it. There were places in the world that a player could "mark" but it only lasted a day or so. When another player checked it, they would see the marking of whoever was there when the trigger was live. It would reset eventually and if it wasn't claimed then a new player could mark it themself. It wasn't super meaningful ... it was literally just a tell-tale sign that another player had adventured through that area somewhat recently. It was a really little detail that helped the world feel alive.
