Boy this sure gets out of hand very quickly.
Voice chat is going to be in the game and it will be optional. End of story. It won't become some mandatory thing nor do I think it will be completely unutilized, it's simply a matter of different strokes for different folks. Extremism is awful and drawing absurd conclusions that it will become a requirement for grouping and playing with others is mind bogglingly out of touch with reality. I'll eat my own socks if this turns out to actually be a thing, so save this post.
And to restate, via Kilsin:

It isn't wasted resources, please stop using that term, VOIP falls under sound which is a completely different team to world builders, programmers etc. it doesn't take away from anything, it only adds more to the game, the VOIP will most likely be in group, raid and guild situations but will be optional, if you don't want it, turn it off, it is that simple.
Implementing a system like this isn't in exchange for something else, we don't sit around a table and say "VOIP sounds good, let's roll with it", "Oh wait, now we have to remove trees and quests..." it just doesn't work like that but posting that it is a wasted resource immediately puts people on the aggressive side of the fence to protect other things in the game from being "forgotten about" or removed and it is completely false. :)
If you don't like something that we implement in-game, you will most likely be able to toggle or turn it off but it is not a "waste of resources" as there will be a lot of people who will use it and enjoy it. :)

Thats good news, thanks for the repost. So much to get caught up on lol

You just can't enjoy a good time/game on a RP server without someone else telling you how you should talk/act.
I play to have fun beating challenges and learning to play better, not to increase your immersion.
I play games for about 30 - 40 hours a week and invest a lot of money into my setups. If I am not having fun, that's a big waste.
See, we understand each other perfectly! I could say the same exact thing about people demanding that everyone be in VOIP for a group. ;)
Although, I must say, quite honestly, that I wonder why you are posting on a thread about immersion when you care about the gameplay, not the immersion factor.
Because immersion to me apparently means something different to you. Having fun with the group, beating challenges, talking to friends, imagining myself as my character and my friends as theirs, that is immersive to me.
Voice chat is a huge part of that for me. You take a different approach. That's why Pantheon is giving us the OPTION.
If it becomes mandatory for someone, that is caused by the players, not Pantheon. The beef should be with them, not the voice system.

just curious who are you to say what immersion is or isn't for each individual..we aren't clones. I LIKE my immersion, I've been playing online games since 1995, I've paid my money for this game..to see it go forward, the tenets in this game are EXACTLY what I like what I am familiar with. I also happen to like the challenge that a McQuaid game provides. I've also pvped in many games over the years, too many to count. I should be playing a VR game..no this isn't the wrong game for me. If I choose not to participate in some of the things that others do..such as voice chat. I won't. I come from the time when there was no voice chat at all. Not any kind of adjustment for me..I type almost as quickly as I speak. I will pick and choose what I like to do...I'm not a herd follower. :) So immersion is my thing...and I'm not going anywhere. Don't like what I do...do what YOU like to do. To each their own...everyone has their own playstyle. There's no judgement here..or wrong way to do things.
If immersion is that important to you there are other options that will offer a more immersive gameplay. That is all.
Hasn't most of this community played online games since prior to the internet? Bulletin boards were pretty popular. That was pre '95...but I'm not sure how that is relevant?
If you are good with playing a game that might not be as immersive as something else, great. We all love mmorpgs. Stick to it.
Some people seem to be saying that immersion is their priority. If immersion is the priority there are some virtual reality titles that are currently offering a higher level of immersion than what can be attained with a mouse and keyboard and monitor. While that technology still has a ways to go imho, it is like comparing apples to oranges as far as immersing oneself in a game.
If immersion is important to you, all I can do is recommend that you try out some of the virtual reality options if you haven't. You can still play Pantheon too. You should still play Pantheon but I think you might enjoy some of what virtual reality offers.
Edit: I caught myself typing VR for virtual reality and then realized that it might lead to some confusion around here because it stands for Virtual Realms :)
I am perfectly aware of Virtual Reality..its been a long time coming, I have a book on it with a CD enclosed..that I bought back in 1996...yeah BBS's I know about those too. I just want to say right here..that it is not up to you or buddy next door to tell anyone here that they shouldn't play Pantheon because we don't measure up to someone's particular measuring stick. I am here..I am staying here. And the only people who might insist I have voice chat are probably P.u.g.s and I don't tend to join them..I prefer guild members or good friends that I meet ingame. Immersion means different things to different people. That means my brand of immersion probably doesn't match yours and vice versa. Thanks for the "recommendation" but I came here and supported this game of my own accord..and that's the way its gonna be. Thanks for your permission to play Pantheon..I'll keep that in mind. :P

You presentated a problem, I offered you a solution. I never said not to play Pantheon. If you read my post that you quoted you will see that I recommended you play Pantheon and to give my solution a try as well.
The passive aggresiveness isn't constructive.
itvar said:Sorry luddites, but it's 2017, VC is a thing whether you like it or not. If a group requires and demands you to get in voice then consider this a pro tip: that group probably sucks. In all the time I've played online games, 90% of the time I have never even been asked to get in VC in a PUG. The overwhelming amount of the time I get in VC it is for purely social reasons. And that's what this game is supposed to be about, no?
And the idea that typing is somehow more immersive than talking is laughable. What, are you guys going about your lives with a laptop strapped to your chest? Never mind, don't answer that. It's probably a typewriter.
Why do you feel it necessary to call people "luddites" if they don't agree with your playstyle? Again..to each their own. Let's not be putting "our own way of playing" on others. There is no wrong way to play a game unless a person just doesn't grasp the mechanics and the strategy of playing with others to accomplish mutual goals. Voice chat will exist YES...but its a choice, an option that each one makes for themselves. I don't go around with my desktop on my back or a phone glued to my face. No one said that typing was more immersive...what I stated is I can type almost as quickly as I speak. Remembering also there WILL be downtimes ingame...gives a chance to communicate. I don't want to be in a group that zips through a dungeon in 30 seconds and no communication at all..ala Rift and the cross server groups I experienced there. Pantheon won't be that type of game. Making allowances for other's playstyles is a good thing imho. We don't need to be all exactly the same. So voice chat as an option/toggle is a good idea. I'm all about that. But when comes the time I don't wish to do that...then I'll make sure its off.

Full circle back to my original post...
I think there is enough of us still out there with the same play style of limiting voice chat devices, only using if and when raids occur.
This is good news and what I was hoping for... I really want Pantheon to be my next MMO home for many years. I also need to be smart about how I involve myself inside that world, so I don't repeat what has been happening in almost every game I play right now.
Let's try and keep tabs on each other so we can gather the clan as we get closer to Alpha testing!

Yep Pyye, definitely. Pantheon will be my last MMORPG...coming full circle from 1999. Keep in touch! :)
**I created a list of players who like limited voice chat and moved it to Guild Recruit Section...
Voice chat has never been a problem for me, I enjoy using it. I often play in random groups but I prefer to play with friends. Friends won't damage your experience of the game. They won't ever force you to join a VoiP and they will do their best to reduce all background noise. Or they just aren't your friend. But even with all the random groups I've joined I've never ran into a group where I was forced to join Mumble or be forced to leave the group. And on the rare occasions a random had distracting background noise it was even more rare for them to refuse to try to damper it. This is simply my account of things and I can't speak for everyone. My issue is that with EQ1 being most likely the only MMO I have played without using VoiP I have probably played 8-9 years of MMOs with VoiP and I've never ran into a problem with friends or randoms alike. Not once.
What I would love tho is a 1st party VoiP that swoons people from using 3rd party apps. I can only assume that 1st party VoiPs are inferior because every MMO I've played my friends have always used 3rd party apps like Vent or Mumble. I think it would be cool if a 1st party VoiP could make a solid voice chat system with innovative or at least some cool features. Masking your voice as numerous different races and genders and accents would be great for role players as well as just people who see a tiny female elf but hear a giant man's voice. It's not neccessarily simply a role playing effect, something like this could help keep immersion alive. Talking with your voice is about as realistic as it gets so I don't see how voice chat in general breaks immersion. Before 'texting' people used their voices to talk to each other and I'm pretty sure the time period for PRF and most other MMOs is a period without cell phones or 2 ways.

Amris. (Also Amsai. I think people are getting us confused with each other. <3 ).
I was just asking to be added to the list, my friend. :) Not making any further commentary on anything else. I agree that this is a good place to mind our manners. Ultimately, hopefully, we're all here in hopes of an awesome game and to support the devs in that endeavor.
See what i did there? Devs endeavor? Yeah, I totally went there.

Keeping a list serves no purpose, my friend, we will be implementing voice chat to be an option for people to use in groups, raids and guilds, if people want to ignore it or use preferred 3rd party VOIP then that is fine but I do not think keeping track of people will prove helpful my friend, it will just separate the opinions and be a possible cause of arguments based on labelling members preference, which ultimately doesn't matter either way. :)

Not intended to seperate or boast either side is better... Most that know me knows I don't play that game.
The list is intended to gather similar sytles of play for a possible Alpha / Beta guild. I honestly think this could enhance our gameplay. Not 100% roleplay, but definitely limited VC activity, lots of emotes and text typing, being silly without a real voice... There are a lot of us it appears, that like the quiet game time, taking in the sounds, music, and game effects, just letting our minds go wild an free to interpret as we play.
Man I just realized I sound like a 60's Hippie!!!
I think there will be enough of us who don't care that much for voice chat, that it won't become mandatory.. I'm sure I would rarely use voice chat in pickup groups. I do use voice a lot with friends but sometimes I just want to play from the couch while my wife is watching TV.
As long as I don't have to listen if I don't want to....
