I was thinking about those moments when you are just hanging out with your party around a fire. Telling stories or sharing some moments after you get done with a hard dungeon. There are a number of things along the journey you would need to keep your sanity, and stay warm. One thing in particular is a pipe, and of course some old fashioned tabacco for your pipe. It is such a basic item, and as I have seen it in numerous MMOs as a junk drop, it should be given its proper place in the world.
What would this look like? perhaps just an animated emote that you could type if you had the pipe in your inventory. This could go a number of different directions, and I am sure the roleplayers wouldn't mind having one more item in their tool box to find immersion.
Great idea, if even only for an emote. And high level wizards could be able to blow ships!
Nice touch of flavor. Would probably make more sense as a slash command like /smoke or /pipe, rather than an actual item that takes up space in your inventory, although I wouldn't be against it. Having stuff to "show off" that are purely cosmetic can be fun too. I also like it when characters do or say interesting things like that just after being idle for a minute or two. However, I expect emotes like this to come much later.
I didn't play past Pre-Alpha in LOTRO lol, I seem to recall telling one of the devs that instancing the entire game was very difficult to swallow. Kinda regret not giving it a try now, I love emotes, and they really are part of the QOL aspect of a game. (as is jumping, but this isn't about GW1...)
I personally like the idea of it being an item, could open up the chance to show off your pipe collection, and you could execute other /emotes while sitting there with your friends. But hey, I am honestly not picky, I would just be happy to see it done.
"Its high time we had the freedom to live out our pipe dreams. Don't let democracy go up in smoke. Exercise your right and vote for Old Toby today!" Paid for by Friends of Toby PAC. Not authorized by any developer or developers' committee.
I think the state (VR) should launch a provisional ballot measure (forum poll) to legalize (add to Pantheon) the consumption (emote) of the enlightening substance known as "Old Toby".
I 7th this notion!
I like the idea of a collectible item such as the pipe. I also like the idea of tieing emotes to items, would be a nice evolution to the age-old emote mechanic.
Different regions around the world would have different styles of pipes. And I like the different smoke ring animation idea and/or just multiple animations for smoking.

One of those minor things about games where things work underwater that really shouldn't. Of course, there may be a magical pipe you can get somewhere that can be smoked underwater, you never know.
So...Maybe Dark Mry pipes that work outside of water? ...bubble pipes maybe. :) Instead of smoke rings they blow bubbles and you think for a second they are actually approachable.... especially if the smile smirk after a particularly well formed bubble.
Now, if it was an ultra-rare item for Myr only, well then I guess ..ok.

I know a fella with one. Gandalf the Myr. But he doesn't share it much.
It would restrict the ESRB rating to "T for Teen". That may limit the intended audience, or ensure they only get the ages they feel would be appropriate. LOTRO, for example, has this rating with these specific mentions: " Blood and Gore, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, Violence "
T for Teen is: " Content is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. May contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling and/or infrequent use of strong language. "
Meaning, some parents who care about ESRB ratiings wouldn't buy the game for their kids aged 12 and under. Which might be perfectly fine. It's up to Visionary Realms. :)

My position on this is.. So? We have enough games for "children", we don't need to cater to more. It is why I loved PC games from the 80's on over that of console games. Console was worried about catering to children, while PC made games for adults.
A company that wants to make games for "everyone", I am extremely suspicous of as thier priorities are not on the game, but "selling" something.
