I like many spell effects in WoW, but I doubt they would fit with a more realistic graphics style.

If I had to pick one, it would be Hellfire!

Honestly, I always have spell effects turned off or way down.  I like to be able to see whats going on when there are tons of spells being cast.

I also hope the spell effects are not over the top. At least the combat spells. The good ones and important ones that a grup will benefit from knowing are in play are alright to have a big effect but the more common ones, the less game changing ones, give them a smaller sugnature. Still has something to it just not too much to clutter things up. Now buffs and other things that are not intended to be combat cast necessarily those can go all out and impress.

One of my favorites was a simple one and I can't even remember where it was from. Kinf of looked like a photon torpedo from star trek but green. it was not to big or flashy but just looked great to me for some reason.

I loved the full on visual spell effects of EQ, I also could recognize many of them by the sound that they made which was really cool. I remember a spell that sounded like a lawnmower that had an idling problem, it was unique. Somebody took the time to make sure that they were unique and it was appreciated then and now. It gave me much enjoyment.

Flare iirc.  Used almost only at the docks waiting for the boat ;)

It was nice just cuz alot of players never bothered buying let alone casting it.  Too expensive at the first few levels and completely overlooked/forgotten by later levels.

Give us an environment with some serious darkness and it could be useful too.

I pretty much loved all the necro spell effects in EQ. They looked pretty awesome and they followed the lore of the necro class in that they looked pretty evil and dangerous. I'd love to see something like that when the necro class is finally released whenever that may be.

I love spell effects when I solo or do a small group, but honestly I turn them way down or off for others and low for myself when in large groups.  I find it to easy to lose track of mobs especially in raids if my screen is one giant light show.  The simpler the better imo

Everquest did something special with their spell effects. It's hard to pinpoint. It's a balancing act of sound, effects, lighting/shadows and overall color scheme of the game.

In many MMO's, they made spell effects just, too much. They tried too hard. In EQ, the effects POPPED. Sitting in dark Tox Forest as an erudite, seeing those bright blue lights suddenly coming from a cleric in the distance, getting close and hearing that soothing sound that comes with a heal. You can see the blue race from their fingertips AS the spell is being cast just before it cascades around the intended target. The effects stood out, but they didn't dominate. That's important. They were noticeable, and unique, and noteworthy, but I never felt the need to turn down spell effects in EQ like I would in other games. They served the purpose of directing your eye to the point where they needed to be without completely overwhelming the screen.

This... I absolutely love the spell effects of classic EQ. I've never seen another game do it as well, it really made EQ feel like a magical world. Also, since they stood out so well you could actually tell what people were casting so you didn't accidentally double root mobs ect.
When EQ changed the spell effects it really ruined the magical feel for me, I've played hundreds of hours with the new spell effects of EQ and I still hate them to this day.

I loved EQ particle effects. To this day I have yet to see particle effects that rivaled EQ, regardless of how hq or hi res, big or fancy. Its hard to put my finger on exactly what it was about them, but it was beyond just the fact that they grew in size and color (which was awesome, and should 100% be in Pantheon). They had an almost tangible quality to them. The way healing poured from the hands like water, or cinders floating upward and engulfing the hands, arms and even body of the caster. With invis, mirror like bubbles cloaking the caster until they fade away. In buffs, particles actually surrounding the target, embracing them, and then bouncing off as if to show an aura now protected the individual. They were just masterfully done.

Like so much of the game, much of that was lost over the years in updates and with new spells.

TBH, I never really had a computer worth wild too even see what the spell effects looked like other than the buffs really.

But I really like the Sound effects they gave off in Everquest 1, kinda brings back that nostalgia.

Pretty much loved the entire EQ spell effect system as well as the sound effects from those spells. In my opinion it was just the right amount of both and made casting spells enjoyable.

I loved song twisting with my bard. That pattern of various combined visual effects was always amusing.

    From my screenshot folders...

https://66.media.tumblr.com/ff058ef8b3390c4d5e31bf307481df85/tumblr_pkm9990omY1rrdk3eo5_1280.png - AST T3 LB... absolutely gorgeous. Yes, over-the-top. But it's a T3 Limit Break, so it's supposed to be. xD But it's beautiful.

http://mmostuff.tumblr.com/post/181605393758/seer - Speaking of AST, I love pretty much all of the spell effects utilizing cards, a few of which can be seen here! I also like the AST spell effect for Gravity, but... All I have are my heavily color-tweaked edits that include a lot of overlay from other spell effects from a black mage partner. xD So can't really display that.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/5796774043070c2045f5ce001a90bc15/tumblr_nrnhmyyc3J1rrdk3eo6_1280.png - A lot of the ROG/NIN slashing particle effects are fun.

I wish I had taken more screenshots of spell effects in WildStar. One of my favorites was the esper cleanse (with the butterflies that would fly around those hit by it), but I don't have a picture of it. Here's one from google search: https://assets.tentonhammer.com/guides/attached_images/000/000/083/medium/WildStarEsper_0.png?1468381514

https://66.media.tumblr.com/d72185ed2107ecbebd7fb1c74fd1a4be/tumblr_n5yazebwJT1rrdk3eo5_1280.png - I enjoyed many of the stalker animations. I can't remember which one this is - might be Stagger? The purple flicker of nanite effects with the slashing claws was perfect.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/c5049f102986fe1d1e677ee10567705b/tumblr_n5yazebwJT1rrdk3eo6_1280.png - Lovely, clean swiping particle effects.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/c88e2341a1df7e05691fb81056c84ff5/tumblr_o3r08psgEx1rrdk3eo3_1280.png - One of the most iconic abilities in the game: Gate. I LOVED the crash of runes where you left and arrived.

https://i.imgur.com/CiJwBgf.png - This is an unedited screenshot (aaah shame, shame), but I'm lazy and hadn't gotten around to processing this one yet. But! It does display the Sigil of Recovery animation quite nicely! I really enjoyed all the runic effects for spellslinger animations.

A lot of TERA's spell effects (at least for the classes I played) were subtle but effective alongside the animations.

https://i.imgur.com/58PgXaK.png - Always liked the runic charging animation for priest and mystic charging particle effects.

https://i.imgur.com/7LuevBo.png - Nice striking particle effects on slayer, as well.

Don't have any good screenshots of it, but I enjoyed the effects for archer's abilities. Also a cool take on archer as a magic user, in general.

There are great particle effects in Blade and Soul for most of the classes, though my main experience is on force master. I don't have much in the way of good shots of those. In WoW, I really love the updated holy paladin spells! And most shaman and warlock abilities look great. My favorite WoW spell effect is the druid animation+effect for Wild Growth. It looks and feels super powerful.

Uuuh... I'm a fan of pretty spells!

I always liked the higher level enchanter stun spells with all the particles bouncing off the ground, but overall I enjoyed all the spell effects in EQ.

So far, Pantheon's spell effects look great!

I really liked the opacity and colors of the buffing spell effects Panthon had in the early 2016 videos. The current ones are similar in some regard. Hopefully we can tweak that stuff.
