I like guilds and family and trying to get RL friends to play. I like having people I know in game and guild though my brother and I don't always get along. He got me into VG and we 2 maned things for a bit me a DK and him a Shammy. Though we found a good guild with a lot of people I would call friend but have lost touch with. Though guilds arent always great there is always something or someone that is a pain but I believe you can't go without a guild/clan for long even though I am in World of Warships, just biding my time for PROTF.

For me, my guildmates become my friends. I search out guilds who can match my playstyle because why play with a group of people who don't like how you play or when you play or how frequently/intermittently you play? By finding a guild with the same mineset as myself, those people quickly become friends. Whether that group survives into the next game is dependent upon the guild. My current gaming group, with whom I've been a part of for going on 5 years, will not play Pantheon. And even if they did, they would not approach it with the same attitude as me because the games we play now require a different attitude. They will stay friends, but won't be guildmates.
My analogy is this - you see person walking down the street, you may say hi and have a bit of a conversation, but you wouldn't have dinner with them right away - you need to get to know them more. Perhaps bump into them more often. A guild is more like a house party, you know the host had them over so they are probably a decent human being, with more similar interests so, you can strike up a conversation more easily with them and a bond can happen faster there.
I love it!
If friends/family play the same game, and if they play it as much as I do, well, yes, they would be a good choice.
But most people do not have such families. I knew some that did, and sometimes they would join a guild, all together as a package.
If you don't have such friends and family, it's not really a matter of your choice, you have to join a guild.
In fact, based on the raid size that the content is designed for, you may have to join a guild anyway. EQ 1 had 72-people raids, there's no family that can do it on its own.
In the end, if you're fortunate, you will have both. You and your friends/family, playing together and also together in a larger guild for content that requires more people.
I also dont have the priviledge of having any RL gamer friends. They play games, just more of the typical SP, FPS, fighting game casual. No RPG's, specially MMOs. That goes double for family who frankly, im lucky some can speak fluent English. So yeah, guilds for me. I know a couple of ex-guildies who ive kept in touch with from SWTOR and some from Warcraft but thats about all that remains. Hopefully ill be able to get them into Pantheon but knowing them its a long shot. If FFXIV wasnt story-driven enough for them and too "grindy," I doubt they'll want to jump on this.

ty! I probably spend way more time thinking about guilds than is healthy ;)
I like playing with friends and family that have the same playstyle as I do. I'm an adult with a demanding job and enjoy spending time with my family, so I don't like guilds that call you inactive and start pushing you aside just because you may miss an occasional raid or don't play 7 days a week. I would prefer playing with a smaller guild where everyone treats each other like friends and not a tool to help you get more loot.
What I have found though is that people gravitate towards the large uber guilds because the top tier raids require 40+ players. So in a sense the design of the game does help drive the culture of the server. I would like to see raid content that allows smaller guilds to have access to the top tier gear even if that means the raid is more challenging that a raid designed for larger raid groups.
If Pantheon becomes a game I want to play I will be bringing my friends here and making my own guild. Guilds are very important in any MMO expect todays MMO with Automated LFG tools where a person can click a button and get into a group. That does not mean that a LF Group tool is not needed, just no Automated group tools. The tool should list me as looking for X activity and I can list my group open for people for x activity. Pasted that it should be where people message me to get in or if people know me they can just join the party by clicking the button because we are friends.
