Hey, Kevlyn, which flavor of Linux are you running?

    Your comments are encouraging :)

I need a "turn key" move to Linux! LOL

The least amount of pain is what I'm hoping for

I'm truly ignorant of the OS

Reading thru the posts above it looks like I've got a lot to learn if I'm going to finally give MS the boot

It pretty much runs on any distro. Using this thread I have gotten it to work on Mint, Nobara, Manjaro, OpenSuse Tumbleweed, and vanilla Arch.

I am new to Linux myself but I can help you via discord if you want.

PS I loved Manjaro a lot but I had to ditch it because they recently started down a path I won't tolerate (they are collecting user data and making it opt-out). I don't want to fight with any of the supporters who will say it's innocent etc and no disrespect meant toward you or the otherwise very good distro but it's no longer for me. I mention this because your reasons for ditching MSFT are very similar to some of mine so you might want to know this before you spend time on Manjaro.

    Thank you, Loony!

Do you recommend any of those flavors for a 1st time user?

Mind you, I'm not afraid of USING a computer. Command lines, etc.. things like that don't scare me.

I will confess it's.. daunting to think about switching my PC's platform TOTALLY after 20+ years of having a licensed version of M$ on my machines.

I did a search and came up with Elementary, Deepin, Mint, Zorin and Ubuntu

Ubuntu is the flavor I'm most familiar with by name

Familiar with those or just the Mint?

Do you like Mint enough to recommend it?

    Thanks!

Ooo.. missed the end of that about Manjaro. COPY! 100%!!

Why is it that engineers and programmers BOTH seem to just throw the opinions/needs of the consumer OUT THE WINDOW so often?? /sigh

    Start on Mint 100%.

Once you get very comfortable with that... either dual boot, use a VM (or my preferred route... get a second m.2 drive since they are so cheap) and leave Mint on your main drive and distro hop on the other drive / VM / dual boot etc and learn.

After your distro world tour and you start feeling froggy go for Arch (plain vanilla Arch, minimum install and only add what you need). I have other pc's I use other distros but for gaming... Arch is just so hard to beat.

I'm able to play just fine on Linux Mint (and it performs nicely, kudos to the devs), but the patcher gets .NET errors. So, if there's a patch, I need to boot into Windows, run the patcher, boot to Linux, then copy the new files. Not really much of a pain, so I haven't bothered troubleshooting yet, but an official Lutris script would be nice.

There was mention of Pantheon being available on Steam when launched. Does that mean it will run under Proton?

Tried this suggestions here, watched the video, tried a flatpak steam / protonUp-qt GE, tried native ubuntu 24.04 with eggroll proton GE and all end up the same way, i log in, patch and start up just fine with 187 but i could never see patch notes text though i can keep logging in and select a server and then nothing, just the pop up, Unable to connect to server with Quit and Back.

    It's crazy.
