The current plan for Release is that every character will be able to chose:
1 crafting skill from among Blacksmith or Woodworker or Outfitter or Artificer
and 1 crafting skill from Alchemy or Cooking/Brewing.
I definitely agree with the end goal once the game population is high and things get worked out. Thing is, this will probably be a pain when starting out new to the game and for everyone in EA, since it will mean you have to get to know people before you can do much crafting, or if you picked the wrong Group B profession. You can't do Armorsmithing without Outfitting (you need leather panels), and you can't do Artificing without Alchemy (you need Flux to do Gemcutting). How about you can do all professions through Tier 1, and starting at Tier 2 you have to choose? That's basically how EQ2 works. By the time you get to Tier 2, you'll have made a few friends in the game, and gotten a feel for what professions you like and what their needs are.
This is why I liked the ideas Camelot Unchained had, if they ever finish that game. Not looking good at this point. But adventuring classes can still craft, but it is limited crafting. Not sure how yet. But they will have crafter classes. They will get full blown crafting. They will also have some abilities to be support during battles. Like a combat engineer setting up and operating cataputs and such.
