When starting a new MMO like Pantheon, do you spend time trying to lock down a name? Do you pledge, buy a special edition or some other thing to make sure you have early access to secure your name? Or are you confident enough to know that your name will be uniqe and not warrant all that extra effort? How will you prepare your character, name or otherwise to enter Terminus?
I have used scores of names over many years - since before EQ released. I can always come up with names.
Unless a MMO has only one server for my region/preferred ruleset if I can't get names I like on one server I will try others.
Almost always I will try to be there on launch day to create characters.
Obviously, in games where you pick both a first name and a last name and first names are not unique there is no problem getting all the first names I want since I do not have combinations I particularly want.
I'm always extremely confident that nobody will think of the same name(s) that I pick for my characters.
Mod Edit: Removed negative portion of the post.
I have found that a character with a good name is more fun to play than a "LEET DUDE" or "AFKCHEESEHEAD." Not that there's anything wrong with those "per se" (all MMO's have them being so large and expansive), but you look forward to coming home from work more after a hard day's work if the name is more in-sync with those from the novels we all love so much reading growing up.
I have at least a Black Rose Pledge and the name is already reserved.
Pantheon is the first game I've ever pledged to. Normally I just create a character and see if the name I want is available (which it typically is), if it's not, no biggy I just pick a new name.
As for the rest of character creation I typically do not spend much time on it. I am not very artistic or creative or picky about graphics so the character creation systems that are very in depth just overwhelm me and I end up just choosing something generic so I don't mess it all up lol. There have been a couple times that I called my 9 year old son in to do that part for me, he's good at it all :) haha
The stats and numbers (if we're given any options) I'll do though, that stuff is important to me.

Edit: Sorry, I meant the name is already thought up and "will be" reserved with my pledge. :)
Addendum: I believe there's a window when you can do it, correct? Or is it just "first come first serve" basis?
Not that anyone on the face of the earth will have the name of my character anyway. :P
I believe Names in games are very important especially if you're an active memeber in a given community i have played on numerous servers for world of warcraft (classic) including private servers and generally really enjoy when i get a whisper hey are you the same from XYZ and i get to reply YEP ! As well if you have a name and you "make a name for yourself" good or bad within the game world people will remember this and it will impact how you are treated ... IE dont ninja loot... or be a great teamate and people will remember.
That said ALWAYS have a back up name :)
I'm none too bothered by it.
I started on MMORPGs with Everquest. As a two-finger typist I rationalized everyone else was a guy and a two-finger typist. So I closed my eyes and did a four letter name alternating fingers - I adjusted them as necessary so that vowels appeared and they looked like proper names albeit spelled a bit differently. So not much thought - and the names also happened to be for female characters (I've told this story before so just carrying on) and since I vowed never to play female characters agaian, those names won't be used again.
Then I moved on to DAoC. Actually ended up playing characters in all three realms so needed brand new names for the characters in the three realms. One character name I was particularly attached to ended up getting banned and changed by the company to something horrible (due to someone disliking the french vernacular of my name). So any attachment I had was dissipated.
Moved on to WoW. Needed a name and sort of adopted a variation of the names from DAoC - and it fit the undead mage character that I played.
So when Pantheon releases, I'll choose a race and class combination and then figure on a name. If it's taken I'll just try again until something sticks. Since I haven't settled on any particular race/class combination, yet, no sense trying to figure something out.
If I see anyone running around using any of my old names I may wonder if they knew my older characters and took it for their own but will eventually just chalk it up to coincidence.

I agree. It is much more intresting to see a name that 'fits' in the world and helps keep immersion than a lot of the stuff we see. When I first started playing WoW, I couldn't take those folks seriously, but had to adjust over the years.

I build my character and then name him based on what he ends up as.
After all, I don't know if Pantheon will allow cool characters or be more fun with something comical.
Also, meta is important to me so I need to know the racial and class abilities to decide what is both strong and fits my playstyle, and different class/race combinations deserve different names.
i thought this might happen but I couldn't resist giving myself the name"Absolute Terror" in the forum. I do hope no one uses it but I know I'm not one of the early pledger during it's anicent time, it was a gamble that I could not resist.
If it is taken it will definitely ruin it for me and the character that I make will feel like a second class citizen!
Edit: please have name auto generator, I don't want to spend hours on naming a character. Small Hyena will be okay for an Orge!

I used to like playing around with the many fantasy name generators I discovered online over then years. It makes it easier. Like you, I don't want to spend too much time on my name, so I will have a list or very unique and odd names ready for launch.
