Destructive.
Flying mounts, albeit fun in a game like WoW, in a game like Pantheon will be destructive to the game. They would shrink the world. They would make content created meaningless as players would just be bypassing everything by flying. Players would not respect the environment at all, just fly over or around. There'd be no danger to travelling. It would speed up the game too much, allowing players quicker progression. It would cheat players out of possible experiences and adventures they could have had and people they could have met. The negatives far outweigh the positives.
I find it a bit puzzling as to why this question is even being asked given the type of game VR has repeatedly communicated they want Pantheon to be. How is this productive in any way? I almost feel it should be in the off-topic section of the forums, lol.

I think many of us wholeheartedly agree. There have been things I've noticed this year that have puzzled me. I hope the new website will have a reaffirmation of what they are going for. I just want to add that I love all of the "No" and "levitation" responses. :)
No.
No to actively and purposely flying of players in the game. I dislike the idea of players being able to take flight and by their own actions decide where they go once airborn.
No, because flying is an easy way out and you're leaving behind a lot of good gameplay options.
No, it could become a major point of attention when developing new content and there is hardly a coming back from flying once it's in the game.
An option here, have a restricted content remove any solid surfaces. And have players work out how to get where by other means. There are already so many options within the class abilities, not to forget crafting.
Who's to say you can't go from one place to another by climping on ropes or other interconnectables. If you design a good balance between enough solid space to provide content and the occasional hanging on ropes to get a cross things. You really wouldn't miss the option of flying. (Thinking rainforest or mangrove roots) Plenty of other magical options to keep flying out of the picture.
This next one might already be considered grey zone. But you can allow players to pay for a leaping "taxi-entity". Where this means of transport is the only way to get from one solid ground to a specific other. I say, transport not controllable mount. That could be leaping transports to cross the gap of clouds and open air, but also molten lava or bodies of (boiling) water. You can have your wide open space below you feel, without actually bypassing content, there is just nothing in between the solids. Even to this point, you don't need flight within the game. And you don't install yourself for the need of these transports for the rest of the game's carrier. You could choose to present this only very few times in a 20 year lifespan of the game.
In one word:
Eventually.
In more than one word:
Gliders might not be a bad thing. It would force people to explore some mountains a bit more just to reach the top and jump off! Also, there's no telling where exactly you'll land. Gives an option to fly without hitting the skybox to avoid mobs and travel across the continent - also keeping classes with portals relevant.
Could also be a skill you level up. Gliders who are experienced know how to use the winds to help them travel further and have softer landings, while beginners don't travel as far and have rougher landings (so first timers probably shouldn't jump off the tip of a mountain or large cliffs).
There could also be areas on the front parts of a steep mountain side that only the most experienced gliders could reach for FURTHER exploration.
And let's be real... you can admire some fine details from above just as much as below and take some breathtaking screenshots ;)

I loved gliding in both Archeage and Breath of the Wild. If done right, I think it can be a really fun mechanic that can even add an element of danger and depth, quite the opposite of unlimited flying. It would just need to be implemented very thoughtfully though.
Flying = No
Levitate = yes please
Flying is cool and all but I'd say no thank you. Levitate , sure. Flying you would fly over encounters that you might not want to miss. By not being able to fly you encounter a rare/named spawn, an opportunity to help a fellow player out and make a friend, it would be a way to safely skip mobs.
