Name format

    Hello all,

I was asking myself the question of how would the character naming system work this time.

Will we, like in EQ, pick a firstname at character creation then to have the choice of picking a lastname later on in the game.

Or maybe would you like to have the option of having a first and a last name directly at start.

I kinda like the old way where our efforts are rewarded with the choice of adding a lastname or a family name, however you want to call it, after reaching a certain level in-game.

Could it be, this time, under the form of a specific questline or would you guys prefer to have it triggered by reaching a certain part of the storyline?

And how about something totally random? A name that we would not be able to choose? Or maybe just to have the choice between a few pre-selected nicknames as a last name for the character?

I think Joppa actually said at some point that he liked the surname thing EQ1 did at level 20 or whenever it was.  That might have been a hint.  So you might be in luck.  I'm hoping they allow apostrophes in name creation.  There's a big difference in the pronunciation between Mathir and Mat'hir.

I really hope we don't have to wait until level 20 to pick our last name. Aside from the weirdness of it logically, it means that we have to get to level 20 to even see if the name we want is available. Plenty of us think name is important and our first name choice can be dependent upon last name availability. Perhaps they could delay the name for one race, because that race's culture waits until you've earned it, but to do it for all is annoying and stands out as an arbitrary game mechanic.

    do it like bdo:

    family name(account wide name)

    character name

    right at level one

so two people with the name Kill can exist:

    Kill(character name) Allskill(family name)

    Kill Deezorb

    Kill Mesoftly

strange i remember a post like this a while back

I enjoyed the eq1 style for the feeling of accomplishment, it was like earning a custom title instead of everyone at 20 got "the adept" or whatever. However I do see the roleplay oddity in requiring level 20 for it.

Speaking of roleplay I'm against the account wide surname for that reason. My ranger is a Treeslinger by birth not an Allskill like my gnome tinkerer.

The issue of knowing a surname is available is only affected by naming filters if 1st names are unique.

And yea there are threads that talk about this hehe

I want to be "Sir Fulton of Thronefast, Slayer of the dead, Defender of Righteousness and Loyal member of the Paladins".

Will that fit on my nameplate?

Yes, but only by like one character space.

If i remember correctly, in EQ two people could have had the same last name? The firstname was unique and the last name wasn't... Someone correct me?

Nope, you're correct.  I had an entire family of people in game with the same last name.  All different folks on different accounts.

Just like in real life yea :P

I like this way better than BDO, to have all my chars bearing the same family name is somewhat depressing to me...

I do hope also that they will let us use apostrophes Math'ir, but I would not like to see other weird signs like *()$%@!> or even numbers.

Knowing the devs, I know they won't allow that and that is why I can't wait for Pantheon!

Wanna see Mousey Tippytoes and Froyo T'baggins running around lol

I don't care if they let you pick a last name at creation, but I don't like the idea of multiple same first names on the server as Brad was talking about doing. I would prefer my unique character names stay mine (at least on my server).

I can only but agree, a firstname must be unique to a server at the least!

This has been much debated but they were leaning towards not having unique first names but rather towards unique first name/last name combinations. With the uniqueness across the whole game not per server for reasons I never quite grasped.

Thank you much for the heads-up Dorotea! I don't fully understand the reasons why such a choice has been made, but I must say that I love the Idea!

I can't be more pleased by their decision <3

    @Reynard,
Thanks for the info. I still don't want to wait to "earn" my own name and would much prefer to earn a title or pick from a list of house names or pick a family crest.

    @dorotea,
I actually like the idea of name uniqueness being game-wide and not per server. It makes for easy server moves and mergers later, which will help keep the populations stable as the game moves past it's initial max population.

As yes, very true! This is probably the main reason behind it.

I would like to be able to pick your first and last name at character creation. Trying to get a name you want really becomes difficult. Picking a last name at creations helps people get the first name they want.
