I have memorable first kills, not memorable drops. The drops were just the motivation. They would come super slow and by the time I ever got anything I needed/wanted it was not memorable at all.
I was honestly happier when I got unique items in EQ2 like the parachute or jump boots. They were not drops, but I remember instantly know they were actually game changing. I imagine it will be the same in Pantheon. I will probably be more thrilled to get the drop to assist in climbing or access to the harshest climates more than any loot drop for watching the damage go up.
Camping j-boots on my Necro was my first real camping experience. Think I sat at my PC for 32hrs in total but it really changed what my Necro could do in solo content. I used them even at 500+ AAs. I would never camp an item for that long again, much older, wiser and I have a RL now! Lol
Wiz epic 1.0 because I solo'd 90% of it with my lvl 70 SHD for my 46 Wiz before I even got half way through with my SHD epic... which I finally finished around lvl 75. The part I needed help for was killing Venril Sathir, which I had a Druid and Cleric buddy help me do. BAM! level 46 wizard with epic 1.0 on a PvP server (was kinda OP). (That same day I had the cleric and druid friend help me clear plane of fear so we could kill Cazic-Thule since I had them helping me... and still wasn't able to finish the SHD epic at that time because it was so ridiculously difficult compared to the other epicquests - part of the reason I quite that game).
The weapon in my profile pic is Epic 1.5, which I had to do at lvl 80... I may log back in and work on 2.0 even though those weapons are grossly inadequate now but just to F'n finish it :(
Impure Heart of Zordak Ragefire for the guild's Rez Stick.
I say guild, because that was what those quests were about.
It is one thing to do a Raid boss with a guild where loot is unknown and up for grabs.
It is a different experience completely to have 50 or 60 people organize on a moment's notice for one avatar.
And we did these epic quests for everyone with each moment just as special as the prior, with dozens running to be part of the final turn in.
Community matters.

I find it interesting that no one has mentioned any actual loot but rather difficult to acquire quest items leading to epic quests.
Players are more likely to form an emotional attachment to something that they had to personally work hard for than for an items they got to loot from a raid mob because it was their turn. Raid drops while powerful are rarely that exciting as they often can just be replaced by another raid drop in the next area but epic quest items you will hang onto long after they lost their value simply because you are proud of them.
This is part of the reason I think that “icon” appearances should be reserved for those items that take a significant amount of effort both in and out of raids. To have everything look “special” just makes everything equally random. You can still have styles unique to certain areas and minor tinting differences but all swords from a specific zone should look like one of several base designs with the local texture pattern on it.
Well said Trasak. I think this is becuase the epics were really the most iconic things in EQ, otherwise you were just like every other player of your class. If we talk about other games though, there are many other memorable drops that were relatively easily acquired.
Finally getting a complete set of matching armor in WoW, or getting those Warlord PvP weapons - I don't think there was ever a more endorphin releasing effect from a video game - which is partially why I had to quit that game. But the epic weapons in EQ were absolutely the most memorable items from that game.

A Bat Wing. Because it was the first thing I looted in EQ1.
Most memorable loot drop was getting the FBSS in lower guk in EQ1. In old school EQ you would have to wait a while to get on the long list to get into the group, and then even once you are in the group, hope you get some good dice. I didn't have such luck, and remember being in the group for literally over 24 hours, and my friend and I took turns playing the character so we could take naps and stretch our legs. Finally winning that roll was amazing. I remember that, at the time, it was selling for 2k plat, which really wasn't that big of a deal to simply purchase but I was still a noob with hardly any coin, so getting that drop was so incredibly rewarding. I still talk with my buddy every once in a while about that night....20 years later.
Just realized that was 20 years ago in writing this. I need a beer. Thanks a lot Kilsin.
Items to sell for Platinum in EQ, and loot rots while hovering around higher level areas were the most memorable.
I was like 11 when EQ came out and my most memorable items were in those first years. I honestly was pathetic about grinding to max, I spent a lot of time hovering around high end groups a chances of gear far outside my level. Odus/Qeynos/Karana as a place that provided loot was my most memorable area. I would spend months killing guards in paineel before they had a faction hit to buy the stuff I could find. I wasnt a big fan of raids at the time period. I didnt loot much of signifigance there but items I bought off of vendors at prices that made me feel stupid later when I realized the freeport/EC market prices. Flayed skin armor $$.
Icewell Keep, Royal Velium Armor, I would hover and check corpses for shields and velium weapons to sell and occasionally get a peice, the full green set was meaningful but so heavy compared to my Flayed Skin.
The Hole, Jagged Sword of the Dragon Slayer was a really meaningful rot, and I was floored no one wanted it.
When luclin came out I was in Echo Cavarns on an alt and a group killed General Jared Blaystich. They just left the sword there. I was again just shocked and was so happy.
Looking back and after playing more I probably should have just maxed out, but the gear ended up being so much more meaningful to me as geared players would let items rot. And NPC vendor finds of high end gear I would overpay for, loved that. Dumb kid, I should have just leveled to max instead of hovering so long in the 1-55 and on so many alts. I was sad when reccomended/required levels were added to gear as it ruined my playstyle of farming platinum for upgrades. Grinding platinum for weeks to afford something was more memorable than a single drop, I would meet people and experience odd things sitting in towns killing guards in a remote part of the world.
This is a great question and something I often think about when discussing with friends from our EQ days. I happened to be in Old Sebillis in a pickup group way down in the dungeon when we happened upon Arch Duke Latol (loved the naming conventions EQ used for their mobs), after a fierce battle he finally fell and dropped a Jaundiced Bone Bracer (JBB) which at the time commanded a lot of PLAT. Nobody in the group was a shaman so it was a pure greed role which I won, but not really having a need for it (Enchanter) I gave it to a random low level shaman who I assumed would never be able to get one of these on his own. To say he was absolutely over the moon about the gift is an understatement, and he used that item (it gave a right click 250 dd I think) for as long as I knew him. However, what I didn’t know was that his RL brother was in the top guild on the server and whenever his guild had extra epic items that nobody in the guild needed he would send me a tell and have me come loot it; I obtained my Enchanter epic almost exclusively through his generosity. Moral of the story, do a good deed and sometimes its paid back in spades.
Its crazy how I can remember this event that happened almost 20yrs ago with laser focus, but I can’t remember what clothes I wore yesterday. I have many such memories from EQ similar to the one above, I’m hoping Pantheon can do the same.
Rint
I looted this Green/yellow Flaming devil in EQ2. No stats or description on it.
I've held on to it for years because I had no clue what it was nor did anyone else.
Such a thing, was soo intriguing for me.
It's a bit similar to an example one of the devs mentioned one day about looking up to a ceiling and not knowing what the pictures/language meant.
I can only hope that there will be drops in the game that you just don't have a clue about what it's for or what it does. But only your actions and advise from others will help you figure it out.
Personally, that mystery item can be in my bank for months on end, as long as I have a hint about where it might be or what it might do or where to get more answers etc, it's notable loot item.
I'm not talking about queststarters, but genuine items in the game that are part of something not obvious or well known.
