Its not so cut and dry for me. Theres not one playstyle that is ideal for me. I prefer a variety of different attack types/patterns/play styles. For various the spells/abilities across all the different classes I am sure I will make at some point:
Direct Damage Single Target - Attack/Ability/Cast >> On target causing it to take damage
Direct Damage AE - Attack/Ability/Cast >> On target causing it to take damage, and causes damage to surrounding enemies in a small radius around the target
Cone Attacks - Attack/Ability/Cast >> Causes damage to targets in a cone shape in front of the player
AE's - Attack/Ability/Cast >> Target Ground, damages targets in varying sized areas, using any school of damage you want. Circle size can vary depending on the spell/ability/mastery.
AE's w/ splash - Attack/Ability/Cast >> Target Ground, creates randomish placed smaller circles in a larger area, causing damage to targets that are within the various circles within the "cluster" of smaller circles.
To better explain what I mean by "AE's w/ splash", I picture stuff like a ranger firing a storm of arrows into the air "Arrow Storm", Or a Druid summoning a "Lighting Storm", Or a mage summoning a "Meteor Storm", etc..
Im greedy, I like both ranged dps and melee; I guess thats why I favour the Ranger class. I love being able to dip in and out of range/melee whenever the situation calls.
I tanked successfully with my ranger back in the day (with a consistant group) with my ranger and I also liked being ranged if we had a good tank along for the ride.
Magic is fine for a change; I preferred dps/healing to full CC though (there were others much better at this than me) but I didnt mind laying the odd root/trap whenever needed.
It depends on the type of game. In games like Dark Souls and COD, where your weapon choice changes basically everything about how you play, that's when I care what weapon I use.
I typically pick what is still meta, yet extreme.
So in a gun based game, that might be any melee weapon, pistols, or sniper rifles. In a swords and magic game that might be any stupidly huge weapon, any sort of explosion magic, or daggers.

In games like Pantheon, where it's auto attack and skills that determine how you play, I honestly don't care if I'm using a dagger, a gun, or shooting fireballs.
My choice of weapon or range just doesn't feel real enough for me personally to care. I pick what's the most OP out of whatever my class is allowed to use, and push the buttons when I'm supposed to.
