like the title say  could we get a button for "Like" because some of comments on the fourm are dead on and i just want to throw a like. I can wait for this addition to the forum its not  that important but it would be nice to have just because i resonate with the comments.

    thanks VR.

I don't think they will do anything here. There is a new forum and website, that will be released sometime in our lifetime.

This is true, but I like the idea...

That’d be cool to have. But I’d also like a dislike button as well. ;-)

This was a thing that was removed on purpose...

It wasnt directed at you. Just the thread in general.   Some people dont realize there was a rating system that was removed on purpose.

This has come up before, and I believe (if I remember correctly) the reasoning for not having it is people will simply "Like" a comment by someone and not give any feedback.  The developers want feedback, they want to know what people are thinking.

I don't really understand that reasoning. If someone says exactly what I feel (or 20 people agree with it) 20 likes should show that. Wth the forum guidelines stating..

    12) One word replies such as but not limited to: /thread, Agree, +1, Amen, Same, gg etc

I don't really understand what they would want me to say to add to something. I generally just say nothing, And this in effect denies them the feedback that otherwise they could see that half the community might have agreed with.

    Makes no sense to me.

    thanks for the reply everyone.

i'll still give my feedback, just "quote" someone and follow by my feedback i just thought it would be nice to have.

VR might have a reason why they dont have the like button.

Just like youtube i just throw a like and keep moving so yeah that might be one of the reason

We actually had a like button in the early version of the forums and it detracted from conversation and engagement quite a lot. The stats showed people would rather click a "like" than actually post and for that reason (among others) I removed it to help grow a more social and engaging community.

If enough people want it back I may look into it but if it has another negative impact on the community it will be removed again! #CommunityMatters

Well, do you see my point Kilsin? There could be dozens that agree wit a persons comment, bit hAve nothing to add, but even posting simply "agree" being against the rules. There input is required by site rules to be withheld.

Your not promoting feedback by removing the "Like" your missing a lot of it.

I would like to see it back.

Like buttons are usually mostly a popularity thing more than actual content of topics. It's rarely offering anything but vanity from what I've seen so far.

You guys have analytics on how a like button impacted thread participation?

Yeah I often have nothing more to add when someone has made a fantastic contribution to a debate that I agree with, but would like to indicate my support for that opinion.

I guess if VR are just interested in opinions and not in how popular those opinions are, that is ok?  It seems a bit weird to ignore that data, but I can kind of understand it, I suppose.

I can't see people *not* posting their opinion, if it differs and they want it known, just because of a like button being there, though.

But I often don't post just "I agree" because it feels like spam.

Coming from way before Facebook and its kin I simply do not see the point to accumulating "likes" and competing to see how many people will "like" your posts in return for you "liking" theirs. Yes I know that makes me an old grouch.

Are we all so lazy that we will click on "like" but it is too much effort to type "I agree"?

"I agree" is a direct violation of forum rule #12

    12) One word replies such as but not limited to: /thread, Agree, +1, Amen, Same, gg etc

That's my point, I suppose a rule change would be an OK compromise.

Edit my edit: On review, before someone calls me on it, an "I agree" might pass on the technically that with the addition of the "I" it is a two word answer. So

    "Agree"

    Is a violation

    "I agree"

    Is not

    /eyeroll

    thanks VR.

If you like something, put in the effort to explain why you like it, own the reason for your liking the post.  By the same token if you dislike a post, either ignore it or get involved in the discussion and explain what you dislike about the post.  A like/dislike button is for the lazy and in no way actually contributes to the discussion.

That said, I'm now stating that I very much dislike the idea of your post.

It's been a while since i've read the rules but ya, it is agianst the rules for one word answers.  This begs the question then, why dis Kilsin keep making "in one word" threads? lulz

Back to the topic at hand (before I get in trouble agian) I personally don't care one way or another if it's there.  I don't feel it would contribute anything worthile in terms of gatering information, but if people want it that's fine with me.

I'd be against a like button for the reasons that some have already outlined -- i.e. I feel it detracts from actual community engagement and tends to cheapen the conversation. However, that by itself doesn't bother me horrendously.

I would be VERY against a dislike button or outright rating system, because I've seen these abused and turned into weapons used to villify people who respectfully express an unpopular opinion. Not a road I want to see these forums go down.

    stellarmind shorty story time:

him:  hey what would you like to eat tonight?

her:  (sends message via iphone:  i dunno)

him:  would you like some hamburgers?

her:  (hits the dislike button on facebook)

him:   uuhh... okay would you like some italian food?

her:  (posts a comment on twitter:  italian food is so last year.)

him:  (frowns and posts on pantheon general forums:  like buttons is like a date that doesn't know she wants to eat.  she's probably a vegan and wants saladons saladry)

her:  what's wrong with these forums?  there isn't a like button.

    him:  you talk?

her:  wow i talked!  thank you pantheon forums for not having a like button ~_^
