Should Inactive account be offered as ingame auctions like real world storage lockers.
This Includes banned accounts.
Why or why not?
No
For one, somebody can always come back and reclaim an account years later, I did!
Any other situation is simply PTW, no thanks.
Well, I liked being able to come back to my account after 10 years and still see all my old stuff, even if it was pixels. Says something for all that silicone valley security storage capability. maybe add some blockchain to it for ultra security, but thenm again I was just a normal person.

Blockchain ha.

No. The account belongs to me inperpetuity. It is not VRs to sell. Besides, what is the definition of 'inactive account' in the first place?
It seems like it could be complex and problematic. Banned accounts are probably best banned.
lol like anyone would play a game where your account and gear gets sold because you wanna take a few months off while waiting for an expansion...
i pledged, i paid for the game, I paid for the time to get the stuff on MY account. it belongs to Me. not VR or anyone else.
I went back to EQ after being gone for 8-10 years. Picked up right where I left off. i now use that same account i started in 1999 to play on a TLP server while I wait 3 years for this game.
My Cleric still had all my gear that I EARNED. it had all my plat. i was able to group as soon as my UI and hotbuttons were set up. my /played time on my Xegony main is Years.
No, they shouldn't and there are many reasons why.
I do have a personal opinion on banned accounts. I think that any account that is subject to a permaban should have all characters deleted so that the name of those characters are freed.
On the same note, I think that inactive accounts that have gone inactive for longer than a 2 year period should have characters flagged for renaming and free up the names that are in use by those characters. I don't think that it is healthy to penalize the active player base, and if someone has gone seriously inactive to the point that it doesn't look like they are returning, then those character names should be made available to the public again.
No. The account is attached to the person who created it. There could be all kinds of problems with someone else controlling it later. Besides, like others have pointed out, life happens and you can and often do make it back. Banned accounts - don't think so. Odds are the reputation from those characters will always be in the backs of people's minds, even though it's someone else sitting at the keyboard. I think a better option for permanently banned accounts is simply deletion.
Storage lockers are put up for auction due to non-payment. Not really a good analogy. If storage lockers were offered as a lifetime deal with one initial payment, then your analogy might be correct.
And since accounts are a few hex values, I find it hard to imagine them occupying that much space.
And I have also returned to games I purchased long past, to then play again for extended periods.
The OP is somewhat ambiguous - I am not sure if the intent was to suggest VR selling inactive accounts or VR providing the ability for players to sell accounts that they do not wish to continue.
As to the first - no, for reasons adaquately given by others.
As to the second - no. We may not be able to prevent accounts being sold on ebay or otherwise but we certainly shouldn't encourage it or provide an easy way to do it. How is this different than having an in-game store and allowing players to buy tokens that let them create maximum level characters without knowing a thing about the game or their class. No, no, no no!!!!!!
It's an interesting topic. I would firmly thank and agree with Kilsin and Vandraad.
That said, perhaps there could be a system design in place for those who want to leave the game and sell or gift their belongings in a practical and reasonably easy and swift manner.
This could be just a storage npc or sorts that guides departing players through the whole gift or sell out process. (This all for ingame currency only ofc). Since the account is undisputably owned by the real life person.
The ingame currency that the departing player ends up with, can still be gifted or 'destroyed' if they really wanted to.
This would leave the account owner with a game account without any enduring belongings or content/ an empty or fresh account as it were.
It might not be the same as what the OP aimed for, but it could be a consideration at least.
