Public type events

    Over the last 10 years or so, many games have begun the inclusion of public type events where all participants are able to join in a fairly common event within a zone. For example, Rift's rifts or Destiny's Public events. Characters of all levels all join in to accomplish a regularly repeated task as in defending a point or taking back an over run location.

    Keeping in mind the complexity of designing these, cost to develop (money, time and manpower) and often they eventually become quite repetitive, do you wish to see these as an option in the game?

     

    Benefits of the top of my head:

    Rewards could be beneficial to the game overall. For example, to spawn a boss type or raid target, would require components from completion of events. This would help regulate who can do what for many of the potential contested targets, as putting in the work would allow you have the option for your team to challenge a target regardless of spawn times. Accumalate requirements and get your turn. In other words, instead of having certain targets be open to anyone to attack, the accumalation of certain components would be required from events and then could be presented to spawn potential targets for teams to battle.

    It would bring higher levels back to outleveled zones and generate community cooperation.

    Inserts quick activities with potential benefits for times when you may or may not have a lot of time to put into the game.

    Lays the ground work for the generation of GM events utilizing exisiting content that can be manipulated to suit an GM agenda. (Event begins and instead of the normal process where a certain distance around event becomes over run for a time, the GM event alters it where an entire local settlement or small town gets over run.)

     

    Potential negatives:

    They can become repetitive and disruptive to leveling characters if the necessary quantity and quality of players are not present to control the event. Designing them in a manner where quantity and quality are not relevant and the event is based on what is present at the time.

    Requires extensive time, money and manpower to generate quality and creative versions of the events. As well, designing them so that either twenty five level 50s can participate or two level 5s can successfully be effective. Obviously, scaling rewards based on participants.

     

     

    This thought popped in my head about 15 mins ago, so this is the extent of my thought process at this point. I welcome any additonal positives or negatives I haven't thought of yet. As well, you stance on yay or nay regarding the functionality in game.

    Like what the collesium used to be in RL?

    Maybe have an arena zone fitted with an easily accessible library of assets to allow repeated creation of unique environments or a small world by whatever Guide or GM wants to spend the time.

    So a GM or guide or Devs can ask, and the leaders can/cannot give permission depending on specs/idea/lore and then they can create a small world/zone in the arena/collesium, add in monsters and choice of items from a loot table, throw in some cosmetics and some unique non-game breaking stuff with neat names (can o'whoop ass), maybe a title list to offer players and then- advertise the public event to occur in the arena?

     

    Or can be used as incentive where the company pays the guide or Dev to design an event in the collesium instead of giving out a 50.00 gift card to chili's or a restaurant in a chain owned by people that own chili's. Or trade off is game design in resume for world created in collesium provided the company will allow whatever is needed to allow that sort of thing. "I did the viscous cube event in the collesium in Pantheon! these are the rules and here are some screenies.." 

    That could be recorded, and repeatable if there were any fan favorites. stuff like that? Or do you mean lik eannual
