play naked!

A separate discussion about reputation included a discussion about money.

    That got me thinking.

When we start in Pantheon, I don;'t want to go through the same old thing of grinding to fully equip a character before setting out in the world.  I don't want to feel nekkid if I have oine empty slot.  In fact I want to go out with leather shorts and a stick and start out without gear.  And, like the good old days, I hope that lasts for MONTHS.  I hope we can't just grind to fully gear right away

Okay, you got me...the title of your post had me imagining something totally different (your intent, I presume. Bravo!)

As to your desire to work hard for those early (and well loved/cherished) scraps of gear - I agree. Let us strive for our success. Rewards without effort are quickly tossed aside, forgotten.

Play naked? Gross.. I wear my banana hammock at least.
But I have to disagree. I love having the empty slots, and serching for weeks to find a ceappy +2ac ring to fill that spot. A mix match of cloth, leather, my best peice being a scrappy chain mail coif until I got those bad ass plate gauntlets... Etc etc .

I think you mean you agree then, not disagree

I think it depends on your definition of gear.  I assume you mean gear with meaningful stats.. and I think you will see that as few and far between in the beginning levels.  I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Lol topic made me think of demon souls where armor is so bad people would just play naked for the speed bonuses=)

I do support OP's view, though. I want my armor to look mismatched until I can either get really good at crafting, trading, or killing high level stuff, without ever even getting low quality cloth shirts without working hard for them. Also, make twink gear level down really harshly to balance it=p

I semi agree with this nekkid business. I know you have to start somewhere in a game and of course there is the suspension of disbelief to factor in. I find it humorous and strange how you usually start most MMO's a penniless, full grown adult, thrown into the wild... yet somehow you have enough on you to start the survival process.

If I'm going to inhabit someone elses body...for once....can they be rich? ;)

Well naked as far as having the flimsy newbie robe or tunic. no pants though. everything else dropped or earned.

As far as gear progression- as much as I agree that gear should not be the sole achievement with new armors every expansion- I think at newbie levels most gear should be crafted, with few odd slots obtainable through home-town merchants. I dont think there should be newbie armor quests, but on the other hand I do see that as a way for the new player to learn about the monsters, armor stats and basic questing.

Not just what we start with but how long it takes to get stuff.  I don't want to have my character fully equipped and every slot filled with matching gear after the first week.  I want that after the first year maybe.

I agree with the crafting, make crafting viable not just at level 50 but all the way through. Difficult to level too, slow levelling like adventure and needing lots of materials.Being one of the first to be able to make the next tier of armor for example would be a great feeling.

I'm sure any new adventurer doesn't just start with nothing. It's not like some homeless guy just decides, "Man I'm tired of sitting on this corner in these rags begging all day... I think I'm gonna go out in the world and hunt for treasure." This guy ends up as a giant rats dinner real fast.

More likely it's the young shop worker who stocks shelves all day who thinks "Man I'm sick of this day job... when I save me some money, I'm gonna go buy a sword and some nice boots and maybe a helmet and go hunt for some treasure." This guy just might make it across the hills and into the cave before he ends up a Gnoll's dinner :-)
