The main two reasons why I am interested in this game is:
I'll admit I haven't followed the game as closely as others. I know there were some heated PvE vs PvP discussions earlier (like 6 months ago or so?).
Is the game still focused on PvE? Will there be any PvP at all (I'm hoping there won't cause I'm extremely burned out of PvP in MMORPGs over the past 10 years).
I truly miss the old Everquest, but being 20 years old it's really dated. I'm really hopeful about this game, but also rather terrified that it will fall into the same PvP focused cesspool like other games, e.g. by implementing PvP battlegrounds, and later open PvP and then whole areas just PvP capturing keeps or whatever.
Already 100's of PvP centric games out there, and pretty much none for those who want to enjoy collaboration and PvE.
Anyways, just wanted to put it out there.
From what I understand, the game is focused on PvE. There will be alternate rulesets with PvP (possibly different PvP rules as well) as disposalist pointed out. They are designing abilities and such so that they can rebalance one of them (PvE or PvP), without effecting the other one. So they can reduce the duration of a debuff, for example, on a spell that targets a player, but still have it have full effect on non-players.
I would think that unless you choose to create a character on a pvp server (if there are any) there will be no pvp other than possibly things like duels, arenas, specified pvp zones that are totally unnecessary to go into if you do not do pvp and the like. There might not be duels, arenas or pvp zones it isn't something I care about since they would be 100% optional. This will be a pve focused game.
I share your feelings - I have looked at a few interesting looking games released or in development to play until Pantheon is released and noted with disgust that they have mandatory pvp. Meaning you cannot quest and craft in peace without risk of another player attacking you. At least one has a flagging system but if you are not flagged for pvp you can *still* be attacked it just costs the attacker some reputation. Idiotic system!
I too am not a fan of PvP, and really want to be able to explore the world without having to deal with hostile player characters. I would even prefer that there were no dedicated PvP zone on an otherwise PvE server, as this would feel to me like part of the world is unavailable to someone who doesn't want to engage in PvP. However, for the folks who like PvP, I think it would be great to have separate PvP ruleset servers so both camps can play the game the way they want to. I think the dev team has stated that this will likely be the case, though I could be wrong.

Sounds like some of the Korean games I played back in the day..they are most often pvp.

Mostly Asian, yes.
I expect any game I play to be worse than Pantheon will be. Just for the next 6 months or year (reference is to Alpha not to release which will not be that soon) I can put up with a lot of garbage if there are also good features. I don't mind limitations on advancement and things I cannot do unless I pvp. But mandatory pvp anywhere I go even if it starts at level 50 (I think that is the Archeage system - a Korean game) is not acceptable. I need some room to be a carebear in.
