Why not when.... you come of lvl to have a spirit pet, you are sent to the spirit world to find one. While you are there you can choose a spirit of your choice, be it wolf, demon, bear, cat or etc. It would only be a skin anyways, why not let the player chose? The options could be endless, its all up to you guys!

Rather than spirit animals, I'd like to see the spirit pets as actual interesting and unique spirits. There's a lot of art in our world to get ideas from, especially in anime, where artists are trying to depict strange and mysterious spirits, rather than a see through wolf.
Well now we have our answer:
Agewalker's Companion
Every Shaman begins their journey with a Spirit Companion, usually in the form of a Spirit Wolf Cub or a Spirit Bear Cub. In this form, the Spirit Companion will stay by your side, but will not interact with your enemies or the environment in any way. At level 10, the Shaman will lead their Spirit Companion through a Rite of Passage, turning the cub into its adult form. In this state, your Spirit Companion begin aiding you in battle at your command. It will also grow in strength as you do, gaining access to a host of unique abilities along the way.
What remains to be seen is how that pet aids you and if you have any control over it. Nothing is more frustrating than having a pet you cannot control (hello EQ1 enchanter pets) that constantly break messes, have terrible pathing, which aggro everything from miles around and/or die if something just sneezes in its direction. Good control of the pet is critical.
While I do not want the pet to be a huge part of our damage output, having it put out adequate damage which would allow the Shaman to save having to cast a DoT could be invaluable. Add to that the capability to buff the pet like we could in EQ1 and it really does become a valuable asset.

If you read the description, it is less a pet and more a spirit companion.

While it eventually does engage in combat I'm betting that it will have ancillary benefits not directly combat related.

remember them saying long time in a video that he would have a choice at level 10 between an wolf or bear. they might have added different animals.
