I really like the looks of this race. Could anyone guess what classes might be open to them? By looks I would say: Rogue, Shaman, Druid, Summoner, Wizard but could be wrong.

I like the Skar too. They seem very tribal in nature which leads me to believe I can role up Skar Shaman at launch ;) I would also throw "Dire Lord" in the list of possible playable classes for the Skar.

Hehe this is interesting, since I was really thinking of rolling a Skar Dire Lord, who is basically an existentialist philosopher/mystic - has turned from the mindless violent ways of the Skar as he has encountered the Void and embraced the Silence within.
><
It's a pretty cool race. However, I highly doubt they will have access to wizard or druid. They lack the enlightenment and dedicated study it takes to learn all those spells. And I don't get the impression that skar are in tune with nature enough to be druids. They seem to be too reckless and destructive.
I would definitely add in the warrior class. Probably wouldn't make the best tanks, but I could see a dps-spec warrior being very common.

That's my thoughts on the classes too. I personally love the skar back story, the culture and the expansionist near feral presentation. I just hate the way they look in the art released to date....they strike me as far too cartoony and over the top for my tastes ...like a wow transplant into terminus or something. Time will tell tho (and as always, mileage will vary by individual)

Hm that hasn't bothered me. And I am usually pretty sensitive to cartoony art. The Skar kinda remind of Zerg from StarCraft or Slivers from MtG. Almost insect-like swarming creatures. Pretty cool. I think it's always good to have at least one race that looks almost like aliens compared to the rest.
I'm hoping they can be Dire Lords or else I'll be in with a little bit of a problemo - in terms of what I'd guesstimate to be able to be that class vs which races I like... that aside, please don't change them. Veering from being humanoid = cartoony? õ_õ It's a strange correlation.
Charr in GW2 are sublimely designed imo, would those be considered cartoony because they're semi-hulking demoncats? See what was then supposed to be Everquest Next's take on a Kerra for an idea of cartoony. An amalgamation of psychedelic arcane energies "haunting" a suit of armour is not all that realistic looking either (gnomes, don't get me wrong I think their design is just flipping grand, no sarcasm there at all.)
To my eyes the ogre looks comical in a way, too. The same feeling I get when looking upon a Norn from the aforementioned game, those seem dumpier than the ferocious Charr while just being giant humans with tatts - the male model sticks out in my mind more, obviously.
Naw. Leave them be. Raw an' all. They're the obligatory critter race. I'm really curious to see how it translates to in-game though. They did a good job with gnomes so I'm looking forward to it!
I get the impression that Skar would have: definitely warrior class (the spiky skin like a DS) on par with, but not exactly equal to an Ogre warrior. Like an oger would have more strength, HP, less mitigation (hits hard, hard hits hurt but can still stand) where skar is less strength, less HP, more mitigation (hits, hard hits hurt more but back-at-ya, stagger)
Shaman, yes. I dont think so much a rogue. Dire lord type, yes, but not as strong as say a Dark Myr dire lord- again on par, but not exactly equal to dark Myr .
And, yes maybe a druid type, for environmental influence, but I dont see much more for casting classes. This way if- say a group of friends all wanted to play Skar, they could get through most content with those four types, fighting, heraling, some mitigation, some spells.
Xilshale said: By cartoony I mean the "edgy" spikes and protrusions for no reason. It looks like it's Justine for cool factor. The lore states: As a sign to all who would encounter the banished race, the bones in their face and skull would be pushed through the skin, marked as heinously as the death they sowed across the realms So I can understand a skulled face and head, not Jim the porcupine boy. It reads like skeletor and looks like a kids interpretation of Pinhead with body spines that should glow in the dark.
Have you seen Skeletor? He has no spikes.

exactly. the lore reads as a skeletor looking humanoid, the art shows porcupine boy, which imo looks rediculous.
I think that they lack relatability, since you just can't figure out where you are in that mess of a body. It's like seeing someone with spiky shoulderpads that would stab the wearer in the head if they raised their arms. It beggars belief that bones would be outside of the body. Exposed bones would dry out and crack, because bones require being in a moist, blood-fed environment where they can be constantly renewed.
I'm not knocking the art. The art overall is fantastic. The concept is just... I dunno... I can't put my finger on it, but it's super ugly and while I loved the Iksar, I can't see myself playing a Skar until I see more of them. It looks like there is an effort to steer clear of anthropomorphic animals (like, say, lizards, foxes, big cats, small cats, wolves, pandas, dragons, dogs, rabbits, cows, squid, et al), but going with something that looks like it was hastily scribbled by the class bully is a step in a direction I can't bring myself to follow. I would normally say, "to each, their own" but I kind of don't want the eyesore and obvious language barrier that a lipless race would present.

Only I can justify the protruding bones by the lore mentioned above, which says they were magically formed?
Zaide said:I feel like aesthetically the Skar were harkening back to the Iksar. I felt like their lore sort of doubled down on this. The problem is Iksar looking amazing and the Skar look pretty strange, their arms are too short and just seem poorly proportioned.
A common misconception. The Skar were actually derived from the Trolls, not Iksars. So think of them more as mutant trolls. Granted, they still took a lot of artistic liberties and don't really resemble Trolls anymore, but that's still where they came from.

I know that they are the "Troll" of the Pantheon world, that said there is little if any resemblance to the common Troll or EQ Troll (since I mentioned Iksar) in appearance or lore. On the other hand they have a lot in common with the Iksar, both in background and appearance; that's probably why it's a common misconception, there is either a strong influence or sheer happenstance has made the two races very similar.

I agree. Even the word "Skar" is close to "Iksar." My first impression was not Troll either. I wouldn't be surprised if they drew some inspiration from Iksars to make kinda a half-troll/half-iksar thing, but Istuulamae never made any mention of it that I know of. Maybe it was more of a subconscious thing haha.
Very interesting race ... I really like the aspect of their lore and the relationship (or lacktherof) with their deity. I would love to test the Skar to get a feel for the vibe of their city and community. I'm dead set on playing ogre when the game launches so I'll be using the testing phases as an opportunity to get a feel for all of the other races and their cultures.
