I'm currently trying out Age of Conan. Never played it before, and heard bad things about it, but so far (only lvl 30ish) its not a bad game if you want to spend some time solo in a MMO :)
Anyway, one thing I've come to like in the game is the sprint mechanic. You normally move with the typical "MMO-Jogging" pace. But by holding shift, you can sprint for a short time (you see a yellow bar which shows the time remaining, I'm not totally sure if the duration is fixed but it seems to be 10s or so). The bar reloads fairly slowly, so it can only used every so often. I like this mechanic because it feels realistic. You can speed up your travels a little bit with it, you can use it to get out of range of mobs attacking you (although in AOC they don't follow your for long anyway). It also works in the water, where you use a breaststroke normally, but a fast crawlstroke when you hit shift.
What would you think about such a mechanic in Pantheon?
See it's stuff like this though that i think makes the game to quick to get around. Now, i liked in EQOA though how rangers and druids could cast "Spirit of the Wolf" on people to give them 30 minutes of faster run speed. i would rather see something like this come back as it was an example of every class offering something important which made you want them around.
Sprint matters in a PVP centric game, not so much in a PVE oriented game. Long duration runspeed buff makes way more sense in PVE.
Please VR, in the name of all that is good and proper in video game theory...do not build PVP specific mechanics into P:RotF. Please, I beg thee.

Thanks Kilsin. I hope not more classes than Druids, Shamans and Rangers have SoW, so it becomes inflation? Especially when the Bard class will most likely have Selo's Accelerando like ability.

Why would we want to ruin the game and class interdependence like that? Give us the benefit of the doubt ;)
Based on screenshots I also believe each class receives a temporary sprint ability as well. i.e. you sprint at a faster speed until your stamina runs out.

Is there any solid structure yet for how buffs will work in the game mechanically?
Long duration like VG? Short duration like EQ? Permanent duration while grouped like EQ2 with short duration temporary buffs thrown in?

Ahh that's pretty much what my post was about then. Would be nice to have :) Of course if you have SoW you won't use this much, but then again you won't have SoW all the time.

I'm curious about this as well. One thing I'm hoping for is that there aren't many different buff durations. Some with 20mins, some with 30mins, some with 40mins or longer...I find it annoying having to load my buff spells to refresh that one spell that's running out.
Speaking of loading spells...I'd love to see spell sets, similar to how you can define and manage them in EQ.

Yes, there are buffs with different length timers on them but so far with 1-10 we do not show a lot of that off yet, it will come later when we expand on the levels and develop the classes in more detail.
Awesome news. Class dependent utility/buff spells are one of the core things I was looking for in this game. It is this player interdependence that has been missing in so many of the newer games. The increased focus on a player's ability to solo by giving each class the same skill set with only visual differences has turned mmo into rpg. I always enjoyed providing rez for players as my cleric or handing out summoned gear to newbies with my mage. It is that pay it forward mentality of helping out your community that really gets a player invested in a game. During character creation I like giving thought not only to what style of play I like, but also to what skills I want to bring to a party, to a guild.

I think it worked quite well in EQ where buff duration was quite long (around 30-40 min up to 2h or so). :) Because of that you could help other low level players with a buff or two in EQ compared to WoW where it was pointless to buff other players because of short duration buffs.

buffing low levels was trivial in WoW because the buffs and mobs were relatively weak. Every single class could solo with ease and with little to no down time. It had little to nothing to do with the length of the buffs.

Yeah, I agree, it worked very well in VG too, we had buffs ranging from 1-2 mins up to 3-4 hours :)
One thing I'd like to see is to have buff durations a lot more normalized than, say, EQ.
At the very least, make buff durations able to be evenly divided into an hour and avoid using % based modification to buff durations.
For instance:
SoW lasts 1h, I have an item with 10% buff duration, now it lasts 1h6m. Please no.
Super frustrating having buffs drop off at completely different times.
