I watched VOT 'Humans' this morning and have to say the topic was very interesting. I found some of the ideas shared there to be very much the opposite of boring.
I especially enjoyed the idea of humans being able to start in almost any racial starting area, while taking a hit in faction, but possibly gaining skills usually deemed only for that race. Cool idea. May not get implimented, but cool none-the-less.
It might be interesting to see humans have a inate ability for resource gathering and as a result take a small hit to native like factions. We are known for being resource mongers in the real world afterall. Maybe this would include giving humans one or two more of a resource gathered as the pro in this scenario.

That's true. We do tend to ruin things. Could have the elves not like us because we destroy their lands. I don't know if having humans be better at harvesting and gathering everything would balance very well, though. Also, since that's based on reality, I don't think it would really make humans less 'boring' in a fantasy setting.

You know what you're right, and I have been thinking about this.
Humans are actually pretty complicated, we are dual in nature sometimes we are nurturing and kind and other times we are destructive and cruel. Maybe humans could be seperated by faction in goodvsevil, and that faction would effect what human cities we are allowed to be in, maybe it might also slightly change our appearance. Maybe it might affect the weapons and spells we use as well. Some food for thought.
You almost sound depressed Verdic. Why so glum, chum? Humans have great history. King Amensol and Havensong of old, Avendyr and Thronefast after the Deicide War. Not to mention our Lady King Amenthiel In the modern era. Rejoice in your human-ness. The Myr are gonna smell fishy, Ogres will get jammed up in doorways, and you just know those gnome encounter suits are going to explode at some point!
EDIT: Just read your post on Pantheon Role Players site, nice backstory. So human paladin then? Was your original intent to be an elf? Just curious. Welcome to the human race ;)
I've always been an Elf/Wood-Elf Paladin in EQ, EQ2, and Vanguard. So yeah, pretty depressed. But i'll keep pushing for PLD class to be the best it can be. So I guess that means I have to hope that Humans get a fair shake in this game.

I have played a human warrior in everquest since 1999, Always seems to be the racial type (aside from Barbarian which is human lore wise in eq terms).
Most likely start as a human warrior here too. but one thing could change all that. I am interested in seeing their back story more. Under what conditions have they come here? What does their leadership Intend to accomplish? Are they a bunch of goobers? Stuff like that. A races back story can be a deciding factor here. A human can be boring sure. Some can be interesting as hell thou!!!
Amenthiel a "goober"!!? Perish the thought. Our Lady King is a worthy descendant of Amensol's line.
Granted the lore does hint that corruption has crept into the glory that is Thronefast, but that just means we will have plenty of evil goobers to eliminate. In our spare time let's start an underwater salvage company (um, I mean historical restoration society) to recover much of Havensong that was lost from the ocean floor and rebuild that jewel, no goobers allowed. The Dark Myr will probably object (violently), but then fish are finicky.
I'll more then likely will play a human female shaman in Pantheon, but would prefer a sub-sect of the Barbarian personally. Since the sub-sect isn't a option (at the moment), I hope in character creation I can make it look close to a Barbarian with tatoos or Viking like appearances. Character creation to me in shaping how I will play my character which means adjustments in body features is important and to select my chosen game names. In World of Warcraft, I went with Orcs because I didn't like playing in the Alliance and didn't like the other races in the Horde. When I went to Star Wars: The Old Republic, I played a light-side Zabrak for the Empire because of my fashionation of Darth Maul (I really need to be checked into a mental hospital if you seen my collection).
Sincerely,
Robert A. Frederick Jr.
Pyye said:I always play a human typically, but the other races in Pantheon are looking pretty sweet, making it tough to play one. So in this case, nice job on design VR, making this decision much more difficult.
Very true. I'm particularly tempted by the Ogres. I just think they look great. If I end up playing a Warrior (unlikely, but possible), I'll have a hell of a time deciding between Human and Ogre. In the end, it would probably be the Human, though, because to me humans are more exciting. Haha.
I do think humans are pretty boring, but at the same time, in most games I'll make an alt that closely resembles me in real life just for the heck of it... usually either a Human Monk or Bard. In Pantheon, it will probably be a Monk. I'm sure it'll be a pretty powerful race/class combo and I feel like doing due diligence to get a taste of everything the game has to offer. But I highly doubt it'll be toward the top of my list of exciting things in the game :P

You mean just like Kyle Bayle and Lucan D'lere? XD
yes, humans are boring. They are the base race. It's like a main character without personality strengths/flaws.
They can be every class though, and lots of people agree making that boring human is cool just because we can relate to them best. Not to call us boring...We just understand ourselves too well. Nothing new here.
Even though it seems like Humans would be boring, I was surprised to find how intriguing they were in EQ. Probably mostly because of their contrast with other races' societies. They're interesting, with their castles, politics, marketplaces, culture.
Also, I think the Human Dark Knight archetype, Dire Lord in this case, of course, is very interesting. Perhaps a bit more interesting than playing that class as an evil race. I also liked the Erudite SK in EQ..
Edit: I just had a funny thought thinking if VR were to "reimagine" the Humans as they've done the Gnomes. Because, hey, it's Pantheon! And so the Humans became different from us, humans. Ridiculous, but could've been a good April 1st announcement! Hah.
Nothing wrong with that Nore, variety is the spice of life.
I just refuse to accept the "humans are boring" trope. Look at their lore in Pantheon. They build communities, share their knowledge and culture freely, don't seek to dominate neighbors. Without Avendyr Terminus would be a very different world today. Look at Thronefast - what a marvel of architecture and engineering. And let's not forget the political intrigue - it would appear things are stirring behind the scenes in the court of The Lady King Amenthiel.
Think us 'normal', think us 'typical', think us 'familiar', but never think us boring.
Humans rock! (Especially their bards)
