This may seem silly but i signed up to the forums years ago, when i click the pledge button it prompts me to make an account... so how do i pledge when i already have an account but no pledge? There's no upgrade from'free'option.

Make sure you're logged in, then scroll to the bottom of this or most any forum page. On the right side is a link named "Subscription". Click it. The page it takes you to has an "Upgrade" link. You are upgrading from the free account. Use that.
