I fondly remember charming sonic bats in solb and wonder if we should be able to charm animals as a support class?

This is a difficult question to offer an informed opinion on. Looking at all 3 healers' 'support' abilities -abilities other than offensive or healing- I can count nearly twice as many of them in the Druid and Cleric lists as the Shaman. However, those listings are years old. In addiction, we've been told repeatedly that we haven't been told ALL of any classes abilities. Even the recent Living Codex that Cohh showed is supposedly incomplete.

We do have 3 flavors of a Slow, so we're not without an CC ability to offer. Charm seems to me to be more powerful than just a slow, root or mez. So I'm cautious of asking for too much, as the joy of getting an improvement to my class is never as great as the sadness of having something taken away. At least for me.

And that's my definitive answer ROLF.

What about the Pantheon version of the shaman even lends you to think that we have any relationship with animals OTHER than our alleged familiar wolf/bear thingy?  Just because that exists doesn't mean we have some deep relationship with nature and animals that would justify having the ability to charm animals. Thats far more Ranger/Druid.

Yes I disliked having charm taken away in EQ. The sonic bats’s stun was marvelous. Vandraad purely because we used to have it in EQ AND the familiars that’s we supposedly choose, get and train for more skills. To me that implies a tie to nature in a different way than a Druid and with animals.

In the real world (yes, reality is my argument) a Shaman is every bit as entrenched and connected to the whole of Nature as a Druid is. Just from a different area of the world.

Shaman's didnt charm in EQ - Druids did...Shaman's had a spirit wolf pet...as they will in Pantheon.

I dont think Shaman's shoudl be able to charm...since they already have a pet.  Plus i only charmed if i had a back up healer because if it broke after buffing it my pet would wrek me...especially in POH...charm a big ape and buff it up crazy....aaaah they would kill my druid so fast...

I remember grouping up as an ogre shaman at the rookery in south karana as a youngling. Left hand multitasking with heals, slows, fleeting fury on melee, roots on adds, dots on mobs, and cannidancing--while my right hand was holding right click down swiveling my view around looking for that roaming treant. Honestly I felt like I was in the cookie jar and knew I'd be caught any minute. Normally I'd be able to spot it and tell the group not to pull while I ran away from his path. Till a druid took roleplaying to seriously and would charm him, buff the hell out if it, and park it on the other side of the hill my group was on and zoned. Would be instant death for me unless flash of light was up, which would cause the whole group to zone out. Claimed it was roleplaying but it was just pure griefing.

Later on as my character was higher our nightly grind group would head to yxtta in GoD. We'd pop in the zone and use my spirit sight ability so I could hop from mob to mob to see where the pixie (possibly a mosquito) patrol mob spawned towards the front, 2nd, or 3rd patrol spawn. Was usually quicker that way than using tracking due to the mob density. I've seen us resetting that zone so many times it could be up to 30 minutes before everything aligned right. Druid would charm the mob and the enchanter would charm something else, proceeded by 5-8 min of downtime from my buffs. Always had to keep a triangle formation with us three in case a charm would break. The druid would no longer play the main healer due to dealing with her pet, which I would now fill. When charm did break I always prayed my quick heal would crit to draw agro from her pissed off pet. As the pet bounced to me the enchanter's pet would normally draw agro before it ran to me allowing the druid to recharm. Ideal runs you'd get some trade goods and an aa in 30-35 min. Other times it could be over an hour for a wipe. Risk just wasn't worth the reward and my eyes were dried out each run from fear of blinking which would result in a wipe. The same group could have made an aa in 35-40 min in one of the halls in Halls of Honor without having to charm. Usually the only downtime there was waiting on mobs to respawn.

Realize this isn't eq but the.shaman is already looking like a decent solo class, we don't need charm. As for utility spell arguement, I'd rather see a barrier shield or a 50% damage transfer shield I could cast on a squishy when things go down the crapper. Personal choice would be a buff we could cast on the tank that transfers 25% of the shaman's threat to him/her. Would help out quite a bit for us with multi-mob pulls when cc is resisted. Our HoT's are pulsating and 25% of that threat is being transferred to the tank while the mobs are finally being contained.

Shamans had regular Enchanter Charm early on in Beta and into release but was extremely limited due to the level they recieved it. It worked on all targets but was setup so that you couldn't charm anything higher than green or low blue con. I forgot the exact level disparity but I remember Shamans obtained Charm at 29 and Beguile at 44. They had a level cap of 24 and 37 respectively. They were then changed to Befriend Animals at 29 and Charm Animals at 34. Basically Druid versions but obtained at a much higher level. They still have those two charm spells today and on the EMUs like P99.

Remember, 34 was when Shamans got their pet wolf so Befriend Animal would be used if desired but probably because there was no alternative.

Personally, I don't think they should get anything of the sort in Pantheon, the same for Druid as their focus is more on an entirely new function, especially with the Druid relying on their Fox pet or whatever variation it decides to take on. They could allow Druids to use a similar spell as Enchanter's Shock & Awe in which your target is confused (won't accept commands) and attacks the nearest non-allied, non-mezzed target for the duration but in Druids case is animal only and on breaking, it returns from where it came.

I think the Wolf or bear pet is plenty.
I would much rather have VR implement the Wolf pet in a proper way, than having a charm that work less optimal :)

I would rather be able to do something like call a spirit ally than charm a mob.  I remember being able to debuff, slow and root a mob, queuing it up for the tank.  I took pride in being able to handle adds in other ways besides the enchantes mez. I would rather not have a charm ability as a Shaman.
