Atmosphere Gloom and the Paladin

Out of all the class reveals I am really liking me some Pally.

The Palidin is going to be must have around undead areas that contain the atmosphere of Gloom.  Also, how will colored mana effect these areas?  Does Lightful Anenger ability assign a color, maybe a combonation of colors?  Will an area have more than on Atmosphere.

All this really make me excited about the Palidin.  Maybe Lightful Advenger will be the Antithesis of Gloom?  I certainly hope Pailidins will be helpful vs. several tpyes of Atmospheres.  Cool Stuff!

    Lightful Avenger

Passive Ability. In combat against an Undead enemy, your attacks will do additional Divine damage and have a higher chance to critically hit, your Wrath gains from abilities will be increased by X%, your Wrath gains from damage inflicted by Undead will be increased by X%, Undead who strike you in combat will take Divine damage and your critical melee strikes will generate Reckoning Points.

In addition, while in the Lightful Avenger state, all damage you receive from Undead enemies will be reduced by X% before your normal mitigation is counted. The amount of damage reduced by Lightful Avenger will be converted to health and spread evenly through the group as healing. This effect cannot occur more than once per second.

Below from the Newsletter 2019 February Behind the Design

The Gloom atmosphere can be found permeating most Undead ruins, crypts, graveyards… places with a high concentration of Undead. This particular Atmosphere impacts players negatively and Undead non-player characters (NPCs) positively while in its area of effect.

    Negative Effects on Players

        • Drains Mana over time

        • Reduces healing effectiveness

        • Increases damage inflicted by Undead enemies

    Positive Effects on Undead

        • Bonus to all stats

        • Increases Aggro and Assist radius

It sounds like every group will definitely want a Paladin when entering an area with undead, and there will likely be one nearby.  On the flip side of that, I foresee entire groups of Paladins "cleansing" undead areas and nearly exclusively leveling up in undead areas when able, potentially limiting the amount of Paladins throughout all of Terminus until end game.  This may make seeing a Paladin like seeing a unicorn to some players haha.

Yeah that would be bad.  How would you combat this?

I think they will have multiple atmospheres in a dungeon.  Also, what they are not revealing, but I think is coming is how different colored magic interacts it atmospheres.   Also how different Player color magic reacts with other Player magic colors.

Example: Let just say the Palidin's Lightful Evenger ability magic color is white, maybe there is not any synergy with a white and white magic.  Maybe you will get different effect from white and yellow (let say Wizard) colored magic.

Or,  White and yellow colored magic have a amplified effect when used in a gloom atmosphere.  So maybe a group of Pallys may not be the best combination.

They (Devs) are crafty enough to design dungeons that will allow tactic's from many classes.  But would preform better in Gloom with a pally present.

Big speculation on my part, that's all we can do at this point.  But, these are the things they plan to balance in Alpha right?

I think it's rather awesome to imagine paladins away for the most part, battling the undead...
It could be ok if undead were spread widely over the world. If you choose to be a paladin, youre choosing to fight undeath, non?

Honestly, no matter what class I play and how "specialized" I am in a specific type of area or zone. I would never only play in one area to maximize exp. I want to see the world of Pantheon way too much to be a "unicorn" lol. That same could be said for Ranger only ever being seen in outdoor zones. I totally get why that COULD be a possibility, but in reality I think most people will level where their friends are but if there's an undead camp/zone nearby, the Paladin will likely suggest it, and the group will likely want to go there because they can wreck face.

Last year i did a couple months of EQ play through when they released a progresson server.  My leveling path was almost exclusively in undead zones (befallen, unrest, mistmoore etc.).  I deffinitely tend to stick around where i feel my character is most useful.  It's nice having abilities that shine in certain areas, makes your class feel like a specialist and a bigger player in the group.  I'll be maining a paladin again and sticking to undead areas as much as possible to be as efficient as i can for a while.  Having that personal lore and expeience in undead areas is pretty cool too.  By the time i leave that dungeon i'll know all it's dirty undead tricks.

I'm imagining the paladin skills to unlock throughout the world will likely be near or in undead areas also.  The one thing that will peel me away from that will be helping my kids get their abilities/loot elsewhere.

It would be great to see all tanks viable for all content, with Paladins shining in undead areas and tending to hang around those places along with Clerics. Then Dire Lords hanging around areas with casters.

All tanks will be viable in all content.... at tanking. Having a specialization does not make you Non-viable in all other areas, it makes you the best suited in THAT area. There's a total difference. All group roles will be able to be filled by any class within that role, period. However, in different situations, one's strengths will outweigh the other classes strengths. Just like rock paper scissors.

NO class will be completely ineffective in their role. And NO class will be the best (or even effective) in every role. It wouldn't make sense.

You could be halfway across the world from anything undead and I bet you you'd still take a Paladin tank over a Rogue tank any day haha.

Perhaps what you're saying is you wish all tanks could be 100% just as effective as each other against all the exact same types of creatures, raids, bosses, atmospheres etc. In which case I honestly disagree, and I don't think its what you would actually want in the long run. But I don't think it's easy to see that distinction until you're actually playing the game. In any class I choose, I actually want to be bad at some things. It creates interdependence within the community. And it gives me a reason to try alts, even perhaps alts in the same class role.

If every class fits their role as good as all the other same classes within that role, it robs the game of flavor. Class distinctions would matter WAY less. That is not how Pantheon is being designed. Certain races/classes will have very specific limitations. In EQ there are certain armors/equipment that you can only wear if you are 1 or 2 races, with a specific diety lol. Sure it may not be fair because maybe no blacksmiths make your race/diety brand of equipment. In Pantheon you'll even be able to choose a race for your character that is not very "viable" for that class. But that's part of the fun of role-play. You can do what makes the most sense and makes your class the "best". Or you can do what you personally like and enjoy to play.

Have you ever seen the Pixar movie, "The Incredibles"? The enemy in that movie said it best. "Once everyone's super. Noone will be."
