MLMP: MMO Lingo Mo' Problems!

  There have been a few posts from people mentioning not knowing what others are talking about. This is completely reasonable, as MMOGs are complex environments and each one is different, with its own mechanics and often terminology. I don't know much about Eve or GW2 or FFXVIOU and can't always understand what people are talking about (though I can usually guess). I don't think stopping this will happen, due to the influx of new people all the time (hopefully), and the sheer size of the vocabulary and concept variety. I'll try to help out a bit and explain what I can so people have a place to go and learn instead of feeling alone in the dark. So here we are! And you can help!

  The idea is to write blog posts about concepts for which people ask for explanations. In order to keep things manageable and benefit from distributed experience in various games, we can all pitch in. I will call this project/series "MMO Lingo Mo' Problems" (MLMP). We can all use similar blog post titles and tags to keep these posts "grouped together". I propose these rules:

  • Keep your posts specific and don't expand from one concept in one game.
  • Entitle your posts "MLMP: game system" or "MLMP: concept in game". Have the game and concept in there.
  • Tag your posts with "MLMP". (I also suggest an additional tag using the acronym for your game).
  • Check before posting. If someone else has posted for that already, comment! Redundant posts will be less effective.
  • Define your acronyms the first time you use them in a post. MMORPG can be an exception. ;)
  • Try to keep posts short, but complete.
  • Try to limit bias, opinion, etc., and be objective.

  So there you have it, pretty simple. If you have a question, send me a message somehow and I'll try to write something up!
